Job description

Overview

The Apprentice B Lineman position utilizes heavy equipment operation knowledge in the construction and maintenance of our nation’s Power Grid. You will assist your team in building, repairing, and maintaining overhead electrical distribution systems.

Job Duties

As an Apprentice B Lineman, you will support your team by:

  • Securing the safety of yourself and others

Physical Aspects

The physical demands described here are typical for successful performance of essential job functions in powerline construction. Team-members are regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, use hands, reach, perform physical labor, sit, climb structures, balance, stoop, kneel, or crawl. Frequently lift or move up to or over 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

Work Environment

Team-members may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibration, extreme conditions, loud noise, and diverse weather conditions as they work outdoors in powerline construction.

General Expectations
  • Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days
  • Operate heavy equipment used in powerline construction
  • Read, write, and communicate effectively
  • Travel long distances on short notice
  • Work in various locations for extended periods
  • Lift over 50 lbs.
  • Work overtime, including weekends and holidays, as required
Functions in Overhead Powerline Construction
  • Work safely on energized and de-energized overhead lines
  • Inspect PPE and rubber goods
  • String wires, set poles and anchors
  • Assist with installing transformers, arrestors, cutouts, cross-arms, insulators, switches, and switchgear
  • Replace fuses, clear faulted circuits, and work with high voltage systems
  • Maintain vehicles, equipment, and tools
  • Perform physical labor and understand proper use of tools and safety equipment
  • Assist with rigging, hand lines, and knot tying
  • Identify circuit voltages and understand basic electrical concepts
  • Assist with transformer installation and perform basic rescue procedures
  • Work at heights, in confined spaces, and understand safety distances and excavation requirements
  • Identify materials, check voltages, and work outdoors in various weather conditions
