Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking an applied spectroscopy scientist to advance remote sensing, spectroscopy, and optical instrumentation. You will contribute to system modeling, data analysis, and prototype development in lab and field environments.

You will mentor staff, collaborate with systems engineers, and prepare formal reports, conference papers, and journal articles.

Qualifications

  • B.S. or M.S. in electrical engineering, chemistry, physics, optics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years in development, application and characterization of spectroscopic measurement systems and optical instrumentation.
  • Strong teaming, cross‑disciplinary collaboration, and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain Interim Secret security clearance by start date and pursue higher clearance; U.S. citizenship required.
  • Ph.D. in electrical engineering, chemistry, optics or related field is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Modeling, data analysis, hardware development, and laboratory and field experimentation to meet mission requirements.
  • Mentor and train staff to build world‑class expertise.
  • Support design, modeling, and testing of advanced optics and photonics systems, including EO/IR sensors and radiometric measurements.
  • Collaborate with systems engineers across the lab to understand and improve mission requirements.
  • Document work in formal and informal technical reports, presentations, and journal articles.
