Job summary

Amazon seeks an Applied Scientist to build physical AI for manufacturing, focusing on first-of-its-kind capabilities on welding cells. You will turn applied research into prototypes and production systems that operate on real parts under shop-floor conditions.

You will own the loop from sensor setup and data collection to model training, deployment, and performance evaluation, collaborating across teams to integrate with robot motion planning and production software.

Qualifications

• PhD in engineering, technology, computer science, ML, robotics, OR statistics or equivalent.
• 1+ years of deep learning, computer vision, human robotic interaction, algorithms implementation experience.
• Hands-on experience deploying robots or autonomous systems in real-world environments.
• Ability to debug the full stack from perception to control.

Responsibilities

• Deploy 3D perception and part-recognition on robotic welding cells to match CAD models and determine orientation, tooling, fixturing.
• Build software pipelines linking CAD to robot motion planning and execution in a production environment.
• Prototype end-to-end solutions from sensor setup to model deployment and performance evaluation.
• Evaluate and integrate commercial robotic platforms and 3D sensing for shop floor AI development.
• Instrument robotic cells, collect real-world data, and iterate models for accuracy and cycle-time targets.
• Collaborate across automation and software engineering to integrate solutions into deployment architecture.
