Job description

Job ID: 2936199 | Amazon.com Services LLC

Sort Tech builds automated and human-managed configuration and work orchestration systems that dictate sortation of packages in facilities (buildings). Our primary goal is to get all packages on the right truck before it departs. By doing so, we help Amazon meet the customer promise, or delivery estimate, which is the time we told the customer to expect their order. When we fail to get the package on the truck on time, then we likely will fail to meet that promise. A very important metric for Sort Tech is delivery estimate accuracy (DEA), and sometimes DEA misses can be attributed to failures by the sortation in the dock. Sort Tech owns the software systems that work in concert with the dock processes to prevent these failures.

Sort Tech Science (STS) applies operations research and machine learning science to under-the-roof (UTR) logistics of the sortation of packages to containers, and the movement of those containers to outbound trailers. These problems are constantly evolving with technology as these processes become more automated through robotics. STS scientists work closely with the Sort Tech Product and Development teams to drive projects from idea to implementation. STS scientists play an integral role in developing analysis approaches, strategies, models, and algorithms that improve the efficiency and cost effectiveness of our global network of sortation facilities.

Key job responsibilities

You will work closely with product managers, research scientists, applied scientists, business/operations leaders, and technical leadership to build capabilities that transform our sortation network. This includes analyzing big data, building end-to-end data pipelines, prototype optimization/ML/simulation models, and launch production capabilities. You will have exposure to senior leadership as you communicate results and provide scientific guidance to the business. Your insights will be a key influencer of our product strategy and roadmap and your experimental research will inform our future investment areas.

About the team

Sort Tech Science (STS) was formed in late 2020 to support Amazon's under-the-roof sortation science needs. As Sort Tech continues its automation to optimization journey, STS is a key partner in this journey and is comprised of applied scientists and an Amazon Scholar.
