Job summary

Amazon is seeking an Applied Scientist to help build the next generation of sourcing and vendor experience systems within the OSS team. The role focuses on optimization, causal inference, and ML to improve inventory sourcing and inbound vendor flows globally.

You will work with software engineers, product managers, and business teams to translate business problems into rigorous scientific solutions and deploy them at scale, contributing to LTFCF and supply chain reliability.

Qualifications

  • PhD in operations research, applied mathematics, theoretical computer science, or equivalent, or Master’s degree and 4+ years of ML, statistics, data mining, and analytics experience.
  • Knowledge of supply chain management concepts—forecasting, planning, sourcing, optimization and logistics or equivalent.
  • Experience building and deploying machine learning or optimization models for business applications at scale.
  • Proficiency in Python with experience developing production-quality scientific software.
  • Technical depth in mathematical optimization, causal inference, sequential decision-making (RL/MDP), or stochastic modeling.

Responsibilities

  • Set the scientific strategic vision for the team and lead problem decomposition and roadmap development.
  • Identify and frame research challenges; invent methodologies to address them and decide between novel vs. existing approaches.
  • Prioritize across short-term vs. long-term needs and business vs. technology.
  • Write maintainable, well-tested code; deploy production-ready models.
  • Drive design of scientifically complex software solutions; deploy models into production with impactful delivery.
  • Develop reusable science components and set standards for state-of-the-art techniques.
  • Influence team strategies and communicate effectively with stakeholders to build consensus.
  • Foster collaborations across Amazon scientists; resolve bottlenecks where technologies impact other teams.
  • Mentor others and participate in the science hiring process.
