Job summary

Amazon's Worldwide Sustainability (WWS) seeks an Applied Scientist III to lead the first autonomous materials discovery laboratory at Amazon. You will design and deploy AI-driven robotic manipulation policies, integrate lab instruments, and operate end-to-end workflows that couple foundation models with real hardware.

You will partner with chemists and ML engineers to push the boundaries of materials discovery while delivering tangible sustainability outcomes at scale.

Qualifications

• Master's degree or PhD in a related field.
• 3+ years of industry or academic research experience.
• Proficiency with C/C++, Python, Java or Perl.
• Experience with MXNet and TensorFlow.

Responsibilities

• Develop, train, and benchmark robotic manipulation policies for materials synthesis and characterization.
• Design and execute sim-to-real transfer strategies including domain randomization and visual adaptation.
• Integrate robotic platforms and laboratory instruments into automated workflows via APIs.
• Architect policy training pipelines using teleoperation data, synthetic demonstrations, RL, and imitation learning.
• Build production-grade agentic runtime systems for unattended experiments.
• Design autonomous campaigns using active learning or Bayesian optimization.
• Drive technical design reviews and set scientific direction for the autonomous lab platform.
