Job summary

Job description

What You Will Do

Join the Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics (T-5) group at Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Theoretical Division. The group conducts interdisciplinary research in fusion science, space plasma science, numerical analysis, computational imaging, optimization, environmental sciences, and critical infrastructure modeling. Research is driven by novel algorithms, numerical methods, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

Job Requirements

This position is for undergraduate students who are actively enrolled in a degree program. Selected students will work 10‑12 weeks over the summer or a 10‑12 week period full time during the academic year.

Education & Experience
  • Enrollment in an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree program in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA on cumulative undergraduate coursework (minimum 2.75 GPA listed in the minimum requirements).
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Desire to learn new skills and openness to work on diverse projects.
Desired Qualifications
  • Independent learning of scientific software packages and analytical calculations.
  • Experience in one or more of the following topical areas:
    • Applied Scientific Computing Research
    • Numerical analysis
    • Algorithm development
    • Linear and nonlinear partial differential equations
    • Scientific and computational imaging
    • Network analysis, optimization, and control
    • Critical Infrastructure
    • Artificial intelligence or machine learning
Location & Compensation

Work is onsite at Los Alamos, New Mexico. Salary ranges from $22.57/hr to $30.53/hr depending on education completed.
