Job summary

The University of Michigan's Center for Academic Innovation seeks an Applied AI Engineer for a one-year post-graduate fellowship focused on practical AI prototyping, platform operations, and knowledge transfer. Reporting to the Director of Technology Infrastructure and Support, you will build and test AI-enabled workflows, integrations, evaluation tools, and technical documentation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in CS, information, human-computer interaction, data science, engineering, or related field.
• Hands-on programming with Python or JavaScript including API work.
• Experience building applications with LLMs, RAG, and agents.
• Experience using Git and cloud/container environments.
• Knowledge of software security, privacy, and responsible AI practices.
• Experience with retrieval-augmented generation and evaluation tooling.
• Ability to learn new technologies to improve processes and outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Prototype and test AI-enabled workflows for CAI projects, building lightweight apps and integrations.
• Support pilots with domain experts, collect feedback, diagnose failures, and iterate.
• Build evaluation datasets, test cases, and repeatable harnesses for quality, reliability, and safety.
• Implement logging, access controls, guardrails, and telemetry with TIS.
• Operate CAI's local AI server with deployment, updates, monitoring, and runbook upkeep.
• Share practical guidance through demonstrations, office hours, and workshops.
