Position: Applications Scientist (Proteomics)

Reports to: Director of Applications and New Technologies

Position Location: Company HQ in Suburban Philadelphia, PA

The Applications Scientist will contribute to the commercial success and continued advancement of MOBILion's HRIM platform by supporting the Applications, Commercial, and Product Development teams. The Applications Scientist will play a key role in developing and demonstrating novel proteomics workflows, designing and executing proof‑of‑concept studies, customer collaborations, demonstrations and strategic application development projects. The Applications Scientist will have extensive hands‑on experience with protein expression characterization, PTM analysis, and advanced protein characterization workflows using high‑resolution mass spectrometry, including Thermo Fisher Orbitrap and/or Bruker timsTOF systems. This role will work cross‑functionally to evaluate new features, workflows, and software capabilities, providing scientific feedback to ensure products meet evolving customer requirements and deliver exceptional performance. Success in the role requires technical expertise in proteomics and mass spectrometry, a reputation for accountability and integrity, and strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities
(1) HRIM‑MS Operation, Proteomics Applications, and Scientific Engagement (60%)
  • Develop, optimize, and execute best in class proteomics workflows primarily focused on bottom‑up proteomics concepts on next generation high resolution mass spec instrumentation.
  • Design and implement workflows for protein expression characterization, PTM profiling, and PTM localization.
  • Operate and troubleshoot high‑resolution mass spectrometry platforms as well as associated LC‑MS workflows, processing and interpreting data to identify biologically and analytically relevant insights.
  • Independently modify protocols and experimental approaches as required to meet project objectives and customer requirements.
  • Design and execute proof‑of‑concept studies demonstrating the value of HRIM‑MS across proteomics applications.
  • Develop expertise in specific proteomics application areas to solve customer challenges and expand the commercial applicability of the platform.
  • Collaborate with customers and key opinion leaders to develop innovative workflows and generate impactful scientific results.
  • Conduct live and virtual instrument demonstrations for prospective customers and collaborators.
  • Support customer method development, data analysis, and technical troubleshooting activities.
  • Independently create presentations, application notes, posters, white papers, and other technical materials highlighting technical outcomes and customer value.
  • Collect compelling scientific data for publication in peer‑reviewed journals, conference presentations, marketing materials, and customer‑facing collateral.
  • Conduct continual literature reviews to maintain awareness of emerging proteomics applications, competitive technologies, and scientific advances while ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory and industry standards.
  • Attend and present at scientific conferences, workshops, and customer meetings, building external working relationships to help create advocates for HRIM technology.
  • Independently manage time and resources to drive successful project completion within prescribed timelines.
(2) Product Evaluation, Workflow Development, and Product Development Support
  • Collaborate closely with Product Development, Software, R&D and Product Management teams to evaluate new products, workflows, features, and software capabilities.
  • Provide clear, actionable scientific feedback to development teams regarding product performance, usability, workflows, and customer needs.
  • Participate in technical design reviews, evaluate emerging proteomics workflows, customer requirements, and provide application‑focused input during development cycles to help guide product development priorities.
  • Test and evaluate the analytical performance of prototype and production systems against product requirements, ensuring the quality of scientific data generated.
  • Ensure the quality of scientific data generated by MOBILion instrumentation through rigorous testing and evaluation.
  • Assist in translating product functionality and workflow innovations into technical content suitable for commercial and marketing use.
  • Influence product direction through scientific leadership, publications, presentations, customer feedback, and market insights.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience; Master's degree with 5 years of relevant experience; or PhD with 2+ years of relevant experience.
  • Extensive hands‑on experience in proteomics, including development and optimization of workflows for protein expression characterization, PTM analysis, and PTM localization.
  • Demonstrated expertise operating high‑resolution mass spectrometry platforms, such as the Thermo Orbitrap and/or Bruker timsTOF systems.
  • Strong understanding of ion mobility spectrometry and high‑resolution mass spectrometry principles.
  • Hands‑on experience with liquid chromatography systems, including HPLC, UHPLC, and nanoLC platforms.
  • Strong expertise in mass spectrometry data processing, interpretation, and statistical analysis.
  • Experience developing and optimizing LC‑MS/MS methods for complex biological samples.
  • Strong understanding of proteomics software tools and bioinformatics workflows.
  • Ability to independently design experiments, troubleshoot workflows, and interpret scientific results.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into compelling customer‑focused narratives.
  • Demonstrated ability to present scientific findings to customers, collaborators, and scientific audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, interdisciplinary environment.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience conducting demonstrations of advanced, HRMS‑based proteomics workflows with a documented track record of successful outcomes.
  • Experience with middle‑down and top‑down proteomics workflows.
  • Experience with ion mobility‑enabled proteomics workflows.
  • Experience evaluating prototype instrumentation, software, or analytical workflows.
  • Experience supporting customers in a scientific or applications‑focused role.
  • Knowledge of oligonucleotide characterization workflows.
  • Experience with Python, R, AI‑based coding tools or other data analysis tools.
  • Track record of publications, conference presentations, patents, or other scientific contributions.
