Job summary

DMG MORI USA is seeking an Applications Engineer II to provide technical support for customers, sales, and trade shows for CNC machines. The role requires hands-on programming, fixture design, and turnkey solutions.

You will conduct demos, test cuts, and time studies, while collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to meet customer needs. Travel is 50%+, and you will train customers post-installation.

Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering or related field preferred.
  • 4–10+ years related experience.
  • Mill-Turn experience is required; robotics experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of part processing, metal cutting, CNC programming, reading drawings, and machine setup.
  • Basic understanding of Metallurgy.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to communicate professionally with customers.
  • Flexibility with shifting priorities.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work 40 hours per week with overtime as needed.
  • Strong analytical/problem solving abilities.
  • Frequent communication with internal staff, customers, and suppliers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform application engineering work independently and set priorities with company goals.
  • Design fixtures/work holding for demos, test cuts, and turnkey projects.
  • Define and troubleshoot complex manufacturing/machining processes.
  • Conduct time estimates for customer parts with 10% tolerance.
  • Use CAPPS, CAM systems, and G-Code/Macro programming to generate CNC programs.
  • Setup CNC machines with program, tooling, workpiece, and fixtures including Mill-Turn and 5-Axis.
  • Inspect finished parts for quality and accuracy.
  • Generate engineering proposals and reports.
  • Setup and program a CMM.
  • Assist with order intake by consulting customers on technical needs.
  • Train customers on equipment after installation.
  • Frequent communication with internal staff and external customers/suppliers.

Job description

Title: Applications Engineer II

Reports to: Applications Manager

Location: DMG MORI USA

Hours: Full Time, Core Business Hours

Classification: Non Exempt

Travel: 50%+

Employment is conditioned on DMG MORI's ability to obtain and maintain any necessary export licensing.

Provide technical support in person or over the phone for customers, sales, and trade shows for CNC Machines. Complete time studies, test cuts and machine demonstrations as per customer requirements.

  • Perform application engineering work independently and set priorities with knowledge of company goals.
  • Design and fabricate fixtures/ work holding for demo’s, test cuts, and turnkeys.
  • Define and troubleshoot complex manufacturing/machining processes.
  • Conduct time estimates for customer parts with 10% tolerance.
  • Use CAPPS conversational programming, industry standard CAM systems, and direct G-Code/ Macro programming to generate CNC programs for parts processing.
  • Setup CNC machines with program, tooling, workpiece, and fixtures including Mill-Turn and 5-Axis.
  • Inspection of finished parts for quality and accuracy.
  • Generate engineering proposals for process and turnkey applications.
  • Generate engineering reports and technical documentation.
  • Setup and program a CMM (coordinate measuring machine).
  • Generate order intake actively consulting customers on their technical needs together with ASM.
  • Train customers on equipment after installation.
  • Frequent communication with internal technical staff, external customers, and external suppliers
Minimum Requirements:
  • BS Degree in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering or related field preferred, and/or machining knowledge.
  • 4 - 10+ years related experience.
  • Mill-Turn experience is required, and robotics experience would be a plus
  • Knowledge in part processing, metal cutting, CNC programming, reading drawings, and machine setup.
  • Basic understanding of Metallurgy.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines.
  • Proven experience to communicate professionally with internal and external customers.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Proven organizational skills, with high attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work 40 hours a week and overtime with advance notice.
  • Strong analytical/problem solving abilities.
  • Frequent communication with internal technical staff, external customers, and external suppliers.
Work Environment:

Exposure to manufacturing/machining environments which may present possible hazards such as noise, electricity, chemicals, heavy equipment, and other automated and manual machinery. General office environment experienced at DMG MORI office.

Physical Demands:

Frequent: Travel, operating a vehicle, standing, walking, bending, squatting, stooping, sitting and reaching. Pushing, pulling, and lifting objects. Repetitive foot, leg, hand, arm, shoulder, and torso movements.

Periodic: Operating power equipment, sitting at desk, utilizing computers and phones.

Occasional: Lifting or moving up to 50lbs.
