With supervisor approval, incumbents may be eligible for intermittent remote work; however, they must physically reside within the Sacramento region or have the ability to regularly report to a City of Sacramento physical worksite with little notice.
This Applications Developer is located in the Information Technology Department within the Public Safety Information Technology group. This position is part of a team responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining solutions that support Public Safety priorities and initiatives. This position provides a wide range of application development duties, technical support, and system enhancements/upgrades.
The ideal candidate will be proficient in object-oriented programming and have hands-on experience with modern frameworks and tools. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of database management, API integration, and best practices in software development. Additionally, the below experience and knowledge is desired in the ideal candidate:
Under general supervision, the Applications Developer performs a variety of professional, technical, and analytical duties involving the design, development, testing, implementation, administration and support of new and existing small and medium sized systems and databases in a multi-platform environment that includes mainframe, client server, distributed and web based systems.
This is a journey-level professional classification populated with multiple incumbents. The Application Developer's responsibilities involve concepts of systems analysis and design, programming, testing, implementation, and maintenance of new and existing systems. The Application Developer classification is distinguished from a Programmer in that the former performs an increased degree of difficulty of work that requires a greater level of technical knowledge to perform assigned tasks. This classification is distinguished from the Senior Application Developer in that the latter serves as team or project leader and possesses a higher level of technical knowledge and skill.
Supervision is provided by an Information Technology Supervisor or higher-level manager. The Application Developer does not supervise.
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be:
Two years applications development and/or database management experience in a multi-platform environment.
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Information Technology or a related degree.
Additional years of experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
Should education be used to qualify for this position, then proof of education such as, but not limited to, university/college transcripts and degrees should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment. Unofficial documents and/or copies are acceptable.
An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD:
Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

(Weighted 100%) – The questions located at the end of the application are the Training and Experience (T&E) Exam. Responses to the T&E questions will be rated and scored. This exam will evaluate the relevance, level, and progression of a candidate's education, training and experience. The exam score will determine your ranking on the eligible list for this job. Candidates who pass the Training and Experience Test will be placed on the eligible list. The hiring department may contact candidates for interview at any time during the life of the one-year list. Candidate’s eligibility expires one year from the date of notification of a passing score for the Applications Developer examination.
(Pass/Fail)– All candidates that pass the examination and are in one of the top three ranks will have their application forwarded to the hiring department for review. The hiring department will select the most competitive applications for further consideration. Human Resources will only evaluate employment applications for the minimum qualifications, as stated on the job announcement, for applications selected by the hiring department.
