Job Summary
Manages the Laboratory Information System, including development, maintenance, design, and documentation of software and hardware applications. Acts as a liaison between laboratory staff and information services, working under the direction of the Laboratory Director.

Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions
- Evaluates current use of clinical systems by laboratory staff, focusing on system design, procedures, workflow, and paper forms. Collaborates with staff to identify opportunities for work elimination and quality improvement. Communicates solutions and follows up with staff to develop implementation strategies.
- Coordinates and manages software upgrades and overlays. Monitors hardware maintenance, develops upgrade plans, coordinates testing, and maintains documentation.
- Oversees daily operations of clinical laboratory systems, monitors error logs, and works with Information Services staff to troubleshoot issues. Maintains documentation of performance issues and resolves problems promptly, communicating unresolved issues to lab administration.
- Follows established standards for system design, configuration, and testing. Maintains accurate documentation of all development activities.
- Coordinates maintenance changes and updates with laboratory and database personnel, ensuring testing and documentation meet deadlines.
- Implements a reliable reporting system for outreach programs, meeting the needs of the outreach manager and resolving issues efficiently.
- Negotiates, orders, installs, and troubleshoots instrument interfaces. Maintains comprehensive documentation from order to implementation.
- Provides troubleshooting and problem-solving support to clinical users, maintaining logs of issues and resolutions.
- Ensures compliance with accreditation standards and legislation. Develops quality assurance measures, writes procedures, and monitors quality indicators.
- Implements and monitors downtime procedures, trains personnel, and resolves downtime issues promptly.
Qualifications
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Education
Certification as a Medical Technologist from a recognized credentialing agency such as ASCP, HEW, or AMT.
Experience
At least 4 years of experience in a clinical laboratory, with demonstrated competencies in LIS/HIS systems, including:
- Systems fundamentals
- Tables and files management
- Internet or advanced language coding (e.g., Visual C++, Visual Basic, Java)
- Project management and leadership
- Mentoring
- System development and interfacing research
- Fiscal responsibility
- Professional leadership and certification
- Customer service leadership
- Experience as an LIS Analyst or Administrator
Additional Skills/Abilities
Excellent communication skills, ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and knowledge of current standards, legislation, practices, documentation methods, and trends in medicine.
