Job summary

Oxford Instruments is seeking an Applications Specialist – WITec to own product and application knowledge for customers and the sales team. You will train, support demonstrations, travel domestically and internationally, and collaborate with marketing and product management.

Travel about 75% of the time, deliver workshops and webinars, and create customer demonstration reports using a value-selling approach to advance opportunities.

Qualifications

About the Opportunity

The Application Specialist (AS) – WITec at Oxford Instruments serves as the expert-level product and application knowledge owner for both customers and the sales team. Reporting to the Applications Manager – MA, the AS provides training, ongoing function/application support, and collaborates with sales throughout the demonstration process. The role also works closely with marketing, other Oxford Instruments departments, and business units to aid strategic planning and projects. The AS follows the OI Demonstration Process, attends demonstrations, workshops, and trade shows, delivers training, and travels as needed, both domestically and internationally.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain expert-level technical and application knowledge for the WITec portfolio of products.
  • Collaborate with WITec salespeople in a team selling environment.
  • Present workshops and webinars for colleagues and customers.
  • Run instrumentation at an expert level for demonstrations and training events.
  • Monitor demonstration equipment to ensure peak performance.
  • Collaborate with Marketing, Product Management, and Sales Leadership to create collateral.
  • Provide ongoing relationship management and application support for existing customers.
  • Follow the OI demonstration process and complete internal demonstration reporting on time.
  • Create and present customer demonstration reports with a sense of urgency.
  • Use a holistic OI value-selling approach when engaging customers throughout the demonstration process.
  • Utilize video conferencing and remote demonstrations to advance opportunities wherever possible.
  • Manage expenses and travel planning to minimize operation costs.
  • Support Service with applications/technical assistance, instrument repairs, installations, and customer trainings.
  • Familiarize with all OI Business Unit offerings outside WITec to strengthen company position and generate new leads.
  • Monitor local industry trends and competitor activity to proactively develop strategies and mitigate threats.
  • Attend trade shows, conventions, and internal/external sales meetings as required.
  • Complete other responsibilities and duties upon request.
About the Candidate
  • At least 3–5 years of Applications Specialist experience.
  • 3–5 years of sales experience in the scientific space preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field.
  • In-depth experience with relevant technologies, customers, and markets.
  • Raman spectroscpy experience required.
  • Ability to travel approximately 75% of the time, including occasional international travel.

  • Strong sense of urgency.
  • Miller Heiman sales training preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in technical sales and/or applications.
  • Professional network and tools enabling immediate results.
  • Scientific background and knowledge of the scientific market.
  • Effective presentation skills tailored to varied audiences.
  • Capacity to collaborate with sales, service, product marketing, and other departments.
  • Highly developed commercial understanding.
