Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field and 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience integrating and supporting enterprise SaaS or collaboration platforms in production.
  • Experience designing and testing integrations using REST APIs and related tech.
  • Knowledge of API reliability, IAM, SSO, SAML, OAuth/OIDC, and RBAC.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical ownership for assigned applications, including architecture, configuration standards, upgrades, and lifecycle recommendations.
  • Architect and implement secure integrations using APIs, webhooks, identity services, plugins, automation platforms, and event-driven workflows.
  • Establish reusable standards for authentication, data exchange, error handling, auditing, reliability, and support.
  • Evaluate new applications and integration technologies for compatibility with security and operational standards.
  • Design automated workflows that reduce manual effort and improve cross-platform processes.
  • Implement secure AI-enabled workflows that retrieve approved information, interact with authorized tools, and execute controlled actions.
  • Ensure access control, data handling, auditability, reliability, and supportability in automated solutions.
  • Diagnose complex issues across apps, APIs, identity, permissions, automation, data flows, and dependencies.
  • Mentor team members and communicate architecture decisions to stakeholders.

Our Cadre5 Lab Partners division has partnered with the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to recruit an Application Integration Engineer to deliver secure, reliable integrations and automation that connect and improve the enterprise application ecosystem supporting the American Science Cloud.

ORNL delivers scientific discoveries and technical breakthroughs needed to realize solutions in energy and national security and provides economic benefit to the nation. This premier research institution located near Knoxville in Oak Ridge, TN, addresses national needs through impactful research and world-leading research centers.

This is a full-time, permanent position that can telecommute. Occasional travel to the Oak Ridge facility may be required.

Position Summary:

The Application Integration Engineer provides technical ownership of enterprise applications and designs secure integrations, automation, and AI-enabled workflows across supported platforms. The role establishes technical standards, resolves complex cross-platform issues, and improves application reliability, usability, and operational supportability.

Supported platforms may include GitLab, Google Workspace, Jira, Confluence, Zoom, Slack, Bitwarden, identity services, APIs, knowledge sources, and related business and engineering applications. The engineer works closely with project leadership, engineering, platform, cybersecurity, identity, vendor, and support teams.

Job Responsibilities:
Application Architecture and Integration
  • Provide technical ownership for assigned applications, including architecture, configuration standards, upgrades, integration design, documentation, and lifecycle recommendations.
  • Architect and implement secure integrations using APIs, webhooks, identity services, plugins, automation platforms, and event-driven workflows.
  • Establish reusable standards for authentication, authorization, data exchange, error handling, auditing, reliability, and operational support.
  • Evaluate new applications and integration technologies for compatibility with project architecture, security requirements, and operational standards.
Automation and AI-Enabled Solutions
  • Design automated workflows that reduce manual effort and improve cross-platform processes.
  • Implement secure AI-enabled workflows that retrieve approved information, interact with authorized tools, and execute controlled actions.
  • Evaluate technologies such as retrieval-augmented generation, semantic search, tool calling, and Model Context Protocol when they support defined project requirements.
  • Ensure automated and AI-enabled solutions meet requirements for access control, data handling, auditability, reliability, and supportability.
Reliability and Technical Leadership
  • Diagnose complex issues across applications, APIs, identity, permissions, automation, data flows, and system dependencies, and implement durable corrective actions.
  • Serve as a senior escalation point and provide technical leadership during major application or integration incidents.
  • Develop architecture diagrams, API specifications, runbooks, operating procedures, and support documentation.
  • Mentor technical personnel and communicate architecture decisions, risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field plus at least four years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in application integration, application engineering, systems engineering, platform engineering, application administration, technical operations, or a similar role.
  • Experience administering, integrating, and supporting enterprise SaaS or collaboration platforms in production environments.
  • Experience designing, implementing, testing, and supporting integrations using REST APIs, webhooks, SDKs, plugins, automation platforms, or similar technologies.
  • Working knowledge of API reliability and identity and access management, including authentication, authorization, single sign-on, SAML, OAuth/OIDC, role-based access control, service accounts, and secure credential handling.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis experience across applications, APIs, identity systems, permissions, automation, and integrations.
  • Ability to document technical solutions, evaluate tradeoffs, and communicate recommendations to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance is required. This requires US Citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with one or more supported platforms, such as GitLab, Google Workspace, Jira, Confluence, Zoom, Slack, or Bitwarden.
  • Experience integrating applications with centralized identity providers, automated provisioning, or identity-governance systems.
  • Experience with agentic AI, large language models, tool calling, retrieval‑augmented generation, enterprise knowledge bases, or semantic search.
  • Familiarity with AI security, governance, auditability, data privacy, and responsible enterprise use of generative AI.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, CI/CD, containers, infrastructure as code, Kubernetes, observability, or related platform‑engineering technologies.
  • Experience leading design reviews, evaluating technologies, developing roadmaps, or mentoring technical personnel.
