Job summary

NR Consulting in New Orleans, LA is seeking a Proposal / Applications Engineer to design technical and commercial control-system solutions for industrial opportunities. Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Review customer specifications and define project scope.

Position: Proposal / Applications Engineer

Location: New Orleans, LA

Position Summary

The Proposal / Applications Engineer develops technical and commercial solutions for industrial control system opportunities. This role works directly with customers, Sales, Engineering, suppliers, and internal stakeholders to understand technical requirements, define system scope, develop control solutions, prepare cost estimates, and produce clear and competitive proposals. The successful candidate combines a strong engineering foundation with practical knowledge of industrial controls, automation, electrical systems, instrumentation, and customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Review customer specifications, drawings, P&IDs, data sheets, and other technical requirements to define project scope and identify clarification needs.
• Develop control system concepts, architectures, equipment selections, instrumentation requirements, and technical solutions aligned with customer needs.
• Prepare technical scopes, cost estimates, quotations, proposal content, exclusions, clarifications, and commercial supporting information.
• Estimate equipment, materials, engineering labor, programming, testing, field service, travel, and supplier costs associated with proposed solutions.
• Coordinate with Sales and Engineering to develop technically sound and commercially competitive alternatives.
• Obtain and evaluate supplier quotations and coordinate technical and commercial clarifications with vendors.
• Participate in customer discussions, proposal reviews, technical presentations, and handoff meetings for awarded projects.
• Maintain proposal templates, estimating tools, technical references, and lessons learned to improve consistency and estimating accuracy.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or another related Engineering discipline required.
• Minimum of 3 years of relevant engineering experience in industrial automation, controls, electrical systems, instrumentation, system integration, or a closely related industrial environment.
• Demonstrated experience developing technical scopes, estimates, quotations, proposals, applications solutions, or other engineered customer solutions.
• United States citizenship is required. This position is not eligible for current or future employment visa sponsorship.

Technical Skills

• Working knowledge of PLC, HMI, SCADA, control panels, field instrumentation, industrial networks, and system integration.
• Ability to interpret technical specifications, P&IDs, electrical drawings, control narratives, I/O requirements, and vendor information.

• Strong estimating and technical writing skills with the ability to translate customer requirements into a clear scope of supply.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel and the ability to work with proposal, estimating, and engineering documentation tools.

• Strong organization, attention to detail, follow through, and ability to manage multiple proposal deadlines.
• Commercial awareness with sound judgment when identifying assumptions, risks, scope gaps, and alternatives.

Preferred Qualifications

• Five or more years of engineering experience in industrial controls, automation, applications engineering, or proposal engineering.
• Experience with turbomachinery controls, rotating equipment, gas turbines, steam turbines, hydro turbines, compressors, generators, or reciprocating equipment.
• Experience in power generation, oil and gas, pipelines, petrochemical, or industrial process environments.
• Experience with platforms such as Rockwell ControlLogix, Emerson, Siemens, Modicon, Triconex, FactoryTalk, Cimplicity, Ignition, or InTouch.
• Knowledge of industrial networking, cybersecurity requirements, panel design, FAT, SAT, commissioning, or field service.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• None. May coordinate technical input from multiple engineering and supplier resources during proposal development.

Working Conditions

• Onsite office based position in New Orleans within a fast paced engineering and customer proposal environment.
• Limited domestic or international travel, generally less than 10 percent, may be required for customer meetings, site visits, technical discussions, or business development support.
