Job description

The Applications Engineer is a technical and commercial partner supporting Medbio's growth through the development of accurate, competitive quotations. The position translates customer requirements into practical injection molding, tooling, assembly, and validation solutions while supporting profitable, executable new business. The role works cross-functionally with Sales, Engineering, Operations, Quality, Finance, and program teams from opportunity qualification through award and launch handoff.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a working knowledge of Medbio's manufacturing capabilities, site-specific equipment, tooling, materials, secondary operations, assembly, quality systems, and medical manufacturing requirements.
  • Partner with Sales and customers during RFQ discovery to clarify drawings, specifications, volumes, demand profiles, quality and regulatory requirements, packaging, timelines, and commercial assumptions; identify missing information before quotation.
  • Assess technical feasibility and manufacturing approach, including resin selection, tooling concept, cavitation, equipment fit, cycle-time assumptions, process risks, labor, capacity, and outside services; coordinate technical reviews as needed.
  • Develop and maintain accurate cost models and quotations for molded components and assemblies, including material usage, press time, labor, overhead, tooling, NRE, engineering, metrology, and validation activities.
  • Apply approved costing methodologies, pricing guidance, and margin expectations; assess gross margin and contribution margin where cost data are available, and elevate exceptions, assumptions, and commercial risks for review.
  • Coordinate tooling, engineering, quality, and operations inputs for scopes of work, feasibility reviews, DFM feedback, validation requirements, and realistic project schedules.
  • Prepare clear, complete customer quote packages and quote letters, documenting pricing tiers, capital or tooling assumptions, customer-owned assets, exclusions, lead times, and commercial terms in partnership with Sales.
  • Maintain timely and accurate opportunity, quote, revision, and supporting-file records in designated CRM, quoting/ERP, and shared document systems; follow established intake and quotation controls.
  • Communicate quotation status, technical constraints, and changes in scope or assumptions proactively to internal stakeholders and customers; prioritize work against agreed commitments.
  • Support the transition of awarded programs to project engineering and operations with documented quoted assumptions, cost drivers, technical risks, deliverables, and customer commitments.
  • Participate in customer technical discussions, site visits, and industry events as appropriate; represent Medbio's capabilities and recommend practical manufacturing solutions.
  • Use quote outcomes, quote-to-actual feedback, and workflow observations to improve estimating accuracy, turnaround time, standardization, and NRE capture.

Organizational Relationships:

The Applications Engineer will report directly to the Technical Sales Director at Medbio. Works closely with Sales, Project Engineering, Tooling, Operations, Quality/Metrology, Supply Chain, Finance, and Program Management across Medbio sites; interfaces directly with customer technical and sourcing teams.

Experience and/or Educational Requirements:

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in engineering, applications engineering, technical sales, estimating, or related manufacturing work; medical device manufacturing experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to review CAD models and engineering drawings, interpret dimensions and tolerances, and understand polymer materials and injection molding processes; resin selection experience is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing cost drivers, technical quotation development, tooling concepts, and commercial margin principles; experience with medical manufacturing validation and quality requirements preferred.
  • Proficiency with Excel and comfort learning CRM, ERP/quoting, and shared document systems; attention to data accuracy and version control.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, analytical judgement, customer-facing professionalism, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and cross-functional inputs.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Plastics, Biomedical, Industrial, or a related engineering field preferred; equivalent relevant industry experience may be considered.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform customary office and manufacturing-site activities, follow site safety requirements, and travel approximately 10-40% to customers, industry events, and Medbio facilities as business needs require. Reasonable accommodations will be considered consistent with applicable law.
