Job summary

Thermo Fisher Scientific in Hillsboro, Oregon, is seeking an Applications Development Scientist to develop and release innovative TEM-based applications for semiconductor customers. Qualifications

  • Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on TEM instrumentation experience in semiconductor, materials science, or related industries.
  • Experience in semiconductor manufacturing, research institutes, or fabrication environments focused on process development, process control, or failure analysis preferred.
  • People management experience, including performance management, coaching, and talent development, preferred.
  • Strong TEM expertise and electron microscopy applications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

As an Applications Development Scientist, you will play a customer-focused role dedicated to developing and releasing innovative applications that deliver fast, reliable characterization solutions for semiconductor customers. Acting as the voice of the customer, you will bridge customer needs with Field Applications, Product Marketing, and R&D teams to ensure new product developments address real-world semiconductor manufacturing challenges. You will partner closely with customers to lead first adoption of new TEM solutions and validate their performance in advanced semiconductor manufacturing environments.

A Day in the Life

Partner directly with semiconductor customers to understand their application needs, process challenges, and technology roadmaps while serving as their advocate throughout the product development lifecycle. Lead first adoption programs for new TEM solutions, validate application workflows, collaborate with R&D and Product Marketing, and provide technical expertise across the organization. In addition, dedicate approximately 30-40% of your time to leading, coaching, and developing a high-performing applications team.

What to Expect
  • Partner with semiconductor customers to understand application requirements and manufacturing challenges.
  • Act as the customer advocate throughout the Product Management Process (PMP).
  • Lead first adoption programs for new TEM products and applications at customer sites.
  • Validate application workflows and collect customer feedback to drive continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with R&D to translate customer requirements into product specifications.
  • Evaluate new application solutions and analyze test data to optimize workflow performance.
  • Develop customer-centric application documentation, best practices, and marketing content.
  • Support troubleshooting of software and hardware issues as an application expert.
  • Provide technical support to Sales, Service, Manufacturing, Customer Service, and R&D teams.
  • Contribute to workflow development, scientific publications, conference abstracts, and technical presentations.
  • Lead, coach, and develop team members while driving engagement and performance.
  • Travel internationally up to 25% as required.
Keys to Success
Education
  • University degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum 3-5 years of hands-on experience using TEM instrumentation in semiconductor, materials science, or related industries.
  • Experience within semiconductor manufacturing, research institutes, or fabrication environments focused on process development, process control, or failure analysis preferred.
  • People management experience, including performance management, coaching, and talent development, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Strong expertise in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron microscopy applications.
  • Proficiency in technology diagnostics, troubleshooting, operational optimization, and electron/ion microscope operation.
  • Knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing processes and characterization challenges.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to customers and cross-functional teams.
  • Strategic thinking and sound decision-making capabilities with the ability to balance tactical execution and long-term objectives.
  • Strong leadership, stakeholder management, coaching, and team development skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple initiatives and influence across multidisciplinary organizations.
  • Ability to contribute to scientific publications and technical presentations.
  • Professional working proficiency in English is required; additional language skills are beneficial.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally up to 25%.
  • Valid passport or ability to obtain one.
