Job Summary

The Epic Research Application Analyst serves as the primary technical resource for Epic Research functionality and collaborates across multiple enterprise teams to support the end-to-end clinical research lifecycle. This role partners with investigators, study teams, Digital teams, and research support offices to design, build, implement, maintain, and optimize research workflows that enable clinical research activities while ensuring compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements. The analyst is responsible for supporting Epic Research functionality, translating operational and research requirements into system configuration, coordinating cross-functional solutions, and providing ongoing production support for research users. This position works closely with multiple internal stakeholders—including IRB, Research Informatics, Privacy, Contracting, Security, and Digital application teams—to ensure research workflows are integrated effectively across enterprise systems and support the evolving needs of clinical research.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Act as part of a team of software application and workflow experts to design, build, configure, and optimize Epic Research functionality and related research workflows.
  • Analyze current business processes and translate research, operational, and regulatory requirements into application configuration and workflow solutions.
  • Partner with investigators, study teams, Digital teams, and enterprise research support groups to implement and support research technology solutions.
  • Document business requirements and translate those requirements into functional specifications, application configuration, and workflow design.
  • Design, configure, test, implement, and maintain Epic Research functionality, including associated research workflows and integrations with enterprise research systems.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional stakeholders including IRB, Research Informatics, Privacy, Information Security, Research Contracting, Supply Chain, and other Digital teams to ensure research workflows are effectively integrated across systems.
  • Develop and execute test plans, perform software quality assurance activities, and validate new functionality prior to implementation.
  • Provide ongoing production support by troubleshooting application issues, resolving incidents, identifying root causes, and coordinating timely resolution with internal and vendor support teams.
  • Participate in system upgrades, new feature implementation, workflow optimization, and continuous process improvement initiatives.
  • Support Epic Research users by providing application expertise, workflow guidance, and consultation on research functionality and best practices.
  • Run reports, analyze application data, and perform operational tasks necessary to support the ongoing management of the research application environment.
  • Participate in weekly On-Call rotation to provide production support for supported applications.
  • Participate in regular team meetings, project planning, and organizational initiatives to improve research technology services.
  • Review and contribute to training materials, workflow documentation, and end-user education as needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of Epic Research functionality, regulatory requirements, and emerging technologies impacting clinical research workflows.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required; degree in Information Technology, Health Informatics, Computer Science, Healthcare Administration, Clinical Research, or related field preferred.

3–5 years of experience supporting healthcare information technology, clinical research operations, Epic applications, or a combination of these areas.

Epic Research certification preferred or ability to obtain certification within six months of hire.

Skills/Abilities/Competencies
  • Experience supporting, configuring, implementing, or maintaining enterprise software applications, preferably within a healthcare or clinical research environment.
  • Knowledge of Epic applications; experience with Epic Research functionality preferred.
  • Understanding of clinical research workflows, including study startup, protocol management, research billing, participant management, or regulatory processes preferred.
  • Ability to analyze business requirements and translate them into technical solutions, workflow design, and system configuration.
  • Experience documenting workflows, business processes, functional specifications, and system design.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while supporting operational work and project implementations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with investigators, study teams, clinicians, operational leaders, and technical staff.
  • Ability to collaborate across multiple Digital and research support teams to deliver integrated technology solutions.
  • Strong customer service orientation with a commitment to providing high-quality support.
  • Ability to learn new technologies, applications, and healthcare workflows quickly.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office 365 and other standard business productivity tools.

Working Conditions Hybrid role with onsite work required; candidates must be flexible based on weekly or monthly business needs. Monday–Friday schedule during Eastern business hours. On remote workdays, employees must work from a stable, secure, and compliant workstation in a quiet environment. Teams video is required and must be accessed using Mass General Brigham-provided equipment.
