Job summary

John Knox Village seeks an Appliance Repair Technician to assemble, move and install appliances, repair commercial kitchen equipment and residential appliances. The role includes reading schematics, ordering parts online, and maintaining safety standards.

Qualified candidates have a high school diploma or GED, EPA Level I/II, and a Missouri Class E license. Prior 1–3 years in appliance repair is preferred and a valid driver’s license is required.

Responsibilities

  • Use computer to locate parts for repairs and to access manuals.
  • Maintain and repair domestic and commercial appliances.
  • Be available on-call for emergencies, weekends, and snow removal as needed.
  • Follow safety regulations and maintain professional conduct.

Job description

Assemble, move and install appliances. Repair and troubleshoot electrical wiring. Repair commercial kitchen equipment. Repair of residential appliances. Supportive of the Village mission, values and service/hospitality (PRIDE) expectations. Completes training as required by policy.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assists residents and John Knox Village associates to ensure completion of appliance repair work orders.
  • Repair and troubleshoot commercial kitchen equipment, install new equipment as necessary.
  • Repair and troubleshoot residential appliances, install new appliances as necessary.
  • Use computer to find the right parts for repair of equipment and appliances.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and repair of all domestic and commercial grade appliances.
  • Assemble, move and install appliances.
  • Repair and troubleshoot electrical wiring.
  • Available on-call for emergencies, rotating weekends and evenings, and for snow removal as needed.
  • Adheres to all safety regulations and requirements.
  • Handles stress well and gets along with others within the workplace and with customers outside the department.
  • Maintains acceptable standards of workplace conduct.

The responsibilities described above represent the primary responsibilities of the job. Other responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor as warranted by business needs. The incumbent is expected to perform all assigned responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • This position requires the level of education typically acquired by a course of study leading to a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of two years schooling certificate or trade license required.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and proof of auto insurance.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Missouri Class E driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
  • EPA (Level I or Level II) certificate required.

Knowledge and Skills (required unless otherwise noted):

  • A minimum 1-3 years of residential or commercial appliance repair experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, handbooks and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Must be able to interpret blue prints, construction documents, schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Handles stress well, gets along with others and maintains acceptable standards of conduct.
  • Adheres to all safety regulations and requirements.
  • Basic level of keyboarding required. Ability to use internet for purpose of ordering parts.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The associate is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions including extreme cold temperatures typically below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour or extreme heat temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour.
  • The associate is subject to sufficient noise to need to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level.
  • The associate is subject to vibration of the extremities or whole body.
  • The associate is subject to hazards such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
  • The associate is subject to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation.
  • The associate is subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.
  • The associate is required to wear a respirator when performing certain tasks.
  • The associate frequently is in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, man holes, small enclosed rooms, small sewage and water line pipes, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.
  • The associate is required to function in narrow aisles or passageways.
  • The associate may be exposed to infectious diseases and is required to function around individuals with challenged mental capacities.
  • All associates may be called upon to assist other departments in a declared emergency situation.

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Very Heavy Work – Exerting in excess of 100 lbs of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs of force frequently, and/or up to 20lbs of force constantly to move objects.
  • The associate is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as operating machines such as lathes, drill presses, power says and mills where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach; performing mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces.
  • May need to stoop/bend, kneel, crawl, reach, stand for sustained periods of time and walk long distances.
  • May need to push, pull, lift with regular or repetitive motion. May need to pick up, pinch, type with fingers, grasp with fingers and palm.
  • May need to feel attributes of an object such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touch with fingertips.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; those activities where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, making discriminations in sound.
  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
