Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Commerce is seeking an Agency Legal Consultant I (NS) to preside as Appeals Referee, conducting hearings with parties, witnesses and legal representatives in a full and fair process. The role requires a North Carolina law license and a Juris Doctor degree.

Salary range is $69,704–$78,900 with state benefits including health insurance and retirement; the position is full-time (40 hours per week) with benefits. Applicants must be licensed to practice law in NC.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of administrative law.
• Ability to interpret laws, rules, regulations, and court decisions.
• Ability to analyze facts, evidence, and legal documents.
• Ability to express legal interpretations or conclusions of law clearly and logically in oral and written form.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public and other persons contacted in the course.

Responsibilities

• Preside as Appeals Referee, providing a full, fair and complete hearing for contested issues.
• Find facts relevant to the case and apply the appropriate law to those facts.
• Provide professional, knowledgeable customer service to hearing parties, witnesses and legal representatives.
