Job summary

Yale New Haven Hospital is seeking a part-time Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) for its Surgical Intensive Care Unit. The role focuses on the care of critically ill postoperative and trauma patients requiring ventilator support and advanced therapies.

The Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner is a licensed professional provider who functions in collaboration with an attending physician in a variety of practice settings at YNHHS. Serves as the focal professional for the continuity of care in patient care within scope of practice standards, as well as specialty specific standards to address and resolve problems that may arise.

Position Details

This is a part-time Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) opportunity within the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at Yale New Haven Hospital. The SICU provides care for complex, critically ill surgical patients, including those recovering from trauma, vascular, transplant, thoracic, and general surgical procedures.

  • Schedule: 24 hours per week, 12-hour rotating shifts (days, nights, weekends, and holidays as required).
  • Environment: High-acuity, fast-paced ICU setting with strong collaboration among attending surgeons, intensivists, residents, fellows, and multidisciplinary team members.
  • Clinical Focus: Management of critically ill post-operative and trauma patients requiring ventilator support, hemodynamic monitoring, vasoactive infusions, and advanced therapies.
  • Responsibilities: In addition to standard APP duties, responsibilities include performing comprehensive assessments, formulating management plans, ordering/interpreting diagnostic tests, performing invasive bedside procedures (such as arterial lines, central lines, chest tubes, and intubations, if credentialed), and participating in daily multidisciplinary rounds.
  • Team Support: APPs in the SICU work closely with critical care physicians and surgical teams to ensure continuity of care and contribute to teaching residents, fellows, and nursing staff.
  • Professional Growth: Opportunities to participate in quality improvement projects, protocol development, and research initiatives. Ongoing education, simulation training, and support for advanced certifications are provided to enhance clinical expertise.

Responsibilities
  • Provide assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team. Work in collaboration with the attending supervising/collaborating physician(s) according to state law and hospital regulations.
  • Obtain medical histories, perform physical examinations, review/or order diagnostic/therapeutic tests and radiologic results, formulate and manage patient treatment plans. Perform procedures, prescribe treatment and medications in accordance with institutional and state guidelines.
  • May function as first or second assistant on operative cases (within scope and job educational prerequisites).
  • Other clinical duties may be applied in accordance with departmental and operational goals, training related to profession and practice necessitated guidelines and responsibilities.
  • Educate patients/families on care and recommended or available resources; provide psychosocial support to patients, their families, and significant others.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation within the accordance of hospital and regulatory requirements and protect information of all forms.
  • Demonstrate high standard of moral and ethical behavior, professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient care.
  • Ensure compliance with patient related healthcare regulatory requirements, standards and recommendations.
  • Continuously engage in projects that maintain and advance professional competency and serve as a clinical resource for new house staff.
  • Consistently demonstrate high reliability organizational behaviors through reporting safety events as well as near misses.
  • May serve as a clinical preceptor for NP/PA students and other health care professionals.
  • May collaborate on research, quality assurance and performance improvement projects, and assist with the formation of protocols.
