Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program with Acute Care certification.

Responsibilities

• Rounding on post-operative neurosurgical patients, including those recovering from lumbar fusions, cervical spine procedures, and other complex neurosurgical interventions.
• Evaluating and managing patients admitted with neurological and spine-related conditions.
• Responding to emergency department and inpatient neurosurgical consults for patients presenting with back pain, traumatic injuries, abnormal spine MRI findings, and other neurological concerns.
• Assisting neurosurgeons in the operating room and participating in surgical procedures.
• Working closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, APP colleagues, nurses, therapists, case managers, and other healthcare professionals.

The Advanced Practice Provider will collaborate closely with neurosurgery physicians and the care team to deliver comprehensive patient care across the continuum, including pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care. Responsibilities include assessing, managing, and coordinating neurosurgical health concerns, providing timely referrals when necessary, ensuring seamless care transitions, assisting in the operating room, and participating in inpatient neurosurgical coverage.

What to Expect in This Role

A typical day may include:

• Rounding on post-operative neurosurgical patients, including those recovering from lumbar fusions, cervical spine procedures, and other complex neurosurgical interventions.
• Evaluating and managing patients admitted with neurological and spine-related conditions.
• Responding to emergency department and inpatient neurosurgical consults for patients presenting with back pain, traumatic injuries, abnormal spine MRI findings, and other neurological concerns.
• Assisting neurosurgeons in the operating room and participating in surgical procedures.
• Working closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, APP colleagues, nurses, therapists, case managers, and other healthcare professionals.
• Developing expertise in acute neurosurgical and spine care while caring for a wide variety of patient conditions.

Schedule

• Rotating shifts, including weekends and holiday coverage as part of a 24/7 inpatient service

Required Credentials

• Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program OR Nurse Practitioner program with Acute Care certification.
• Current licensure in the State of Ohio.
• Ability to prioritize work assignments and maintain flexibility in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to meet the requirements/qualifications for clinical privileges with The MetroHealth System within 90 days of placement and maintain privileges.

Preferred Experience

• Experience in neurosurgery or spine surgery preferred, but not required
• APPs with backgrounds or interests in trauma, critical care, emergency medicine, hospital medicine, neurology, orthopedics, or surgery, as well as motivated new graduates with relevant clinical rotations are encouraged to apply
• Graduate of an approved formal training program for surgical assisting or appropriate related certification from an approved military surgical assisting program
