UHA University Health Associates seeks an Advanced Practice Professional to provide high-quality ambulatory neurology care. You will assess, diagnose, and manage outpatient neurology patients, coordinating with neurology faculty and multidisciplinary teams to develop comprehensive care plans.

The role includes performing diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, directing ongoing patient management, and educating residents and students within an academic clinical environment.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
  • National Certification by a recognized APRN certification center.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure as an APRN in West Virginia.
  • Heart Association BLS certification with ALS training as required.
  • PA route: Bachelor's or Master’s in PA, ARC-PA program, and NCCPA certification.

Responsibilities

  • Manages comprehensive and individualized care for neurology outpatients.
  • Orders tests and consults, develops and documents plan of care.
  • Coordinates specialty teams to implement comprehensive patient plans.
  • Educates residents and medical/nursing students in neurology care.

Job description

The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) provides high-quality,patient-centered care as a member of the interdisciplinaryhealthcare team. Working collaboratively with physicians, nurses,and other healthcare professionals, the APP assesses, diagnoses,treats, and manages patients within their scope of practice andarea of specialty. The APP is responsible for deliveringevidence-based care, promoting positive patient outcomes,maintaining professional and regulatory standards, and supportingthe clinical, educational, and operational goals of the departmentand organization.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Advanced Practice Professional(APP) has coordination and clinical skills required for thecomprehensive management of outpatient/ambulatory neurologypatients, (including biological, social, and psychologicalassessments). The APP coordinates involvement of medical specialtyteams necessary to develop a comprehensive plan for the patient andreviews the plan of care with the other members of the clinicalteam, participates in directing that care, performsdiagnostic/therapeutic procedures and coordinates ongoingmanagement of neurosurgical patients. The APP participates in theeducation of residents and medical/nursing students.

Provide healthcare services consistent with state law and therequirements of the professional licensing or certificationauthority and/or hospital privileges, where applicable. Suchservice may include but are not limited to:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR NURSE PRACTITIONER
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE
  1. Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’sDegree in Nursing

  3. Licensure or eligibility for licensure, as a professionalRegistered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in WestVirginia.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE
  1. Bachelor’s Degree as Physician Assistant or Master’s Degree asPhysician Assistant required.
  2. Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant (PA) trainingprogram required.
  3. Certification by the National Commission for Certification ofPhysician Assistants required.
  4. Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board ofMedicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
  5. American Heart Association BLS Certification required withadditional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion ofthe department.
EXPERIENCE
  1. Neurology or acute care experience preferred.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Manages comprehensive and individualized care for neurologypatients and their families in the ambulatory setting.
  2. Completes acute assessments, pre-procedure and compiles surgicalevaluations and ongoing follow-up in the ambulatory setting.
  3. Completes integrated and comprehensive evaluations andtreatment/surgical plans.
  4. With the collaboration of neurology faculty or by followingestablished clinical Guidelines and Protocols, orders additionaltests or consults as deemed appropriate.
  5. Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests followingestablished clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  6. Consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staffregarding abnormal findings in the evaluations of patients.
  7. Performs succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations anddocuments findings in medical record.
  8. Facilitates patient management by coordinating appropriateservices and tests prior to admission and necessary for outpatientfollow-up appointments in the clinic (as applicable).
  9. Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care forneurology patients, which includes teaching, disposition planningfollow-up and necessary referral to other members of the healthcare team, as necessary.
  10. Demonstrates expertise in caring for patients across the agecontinuum of their educational experience and certification.
  11. Identifies unstable or complex neurology patient care situationsand facilitates appropriate intervention in the clinic and/orhospital setting.
  12. Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effectiveemergency care.
  13. Evaluates neurology patients and serves as a coordinator forfollow up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting (asapplicable). Provides acute and ongoing care of the neurologypatient in the ambulatory setting.
  14. Assists in the collection of outcome measures (asapplicable).
  15. Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skillsin clinical decision making by the identification, evaluation, andmanagement of the individual needs of patients/families.
  16. Demonstrates the ability to utilize equipment in a safemanner.
  17. Bases decisions made/actions taken on the relevant scientificprinciples, established standards of care and/or researchfindings.
  18. Utilizes teaching/learning theory and appropriate teachingstrategies in the provision of education to nursing staff, hospitalstaff, students, patients, families, and the community.
  19. Promotes an environment that facilitates learning by respondingto appropriate patient/family preferences, priorities, andreadiness to learn.
  20. Updates own knowledge base throughout the year.
  21. Completes all identified clinical competencies.
  22. Serves as a resource person for staff caring for the neurologypatient.
  23. Provides educational programs to professional andparaprofessional personnel in area of expertise.
  24. Participates in community programs, distribution of literature,as appropriate in area of expertise.
  25. Documents the plan of care, interventions, and evaluations in aclear and concise manner for every patient visit in the patient’smedical record following approved hospital/UHA policies andcompliance standards for documentation.
  26. Collaborates with other leaders and staff to effectively achievepatient outcome-based improvements in care.
  27. Provides leadership in the development and implantation ofchanges in the neurology practice that positively impact patientoutcomes.
  28. Works collaboratively with medical and nursing staff tofacilitate creative problem solving and provide professionalsupport.
  29. Participates and initiates inter-disciplinary approaches topatient care, program development and education. Serves as a professional role model.
  30. Promotes and practices innovation of the expanded role in thedelivery of care to neurology patients and families throughout theinpatient hospitalization, and the ambulatory setting.
  31. Participates and provides leadership for committees and taskforces.
  32. Documents hours and submits billing reports, asappropriate.
  33. Reviews and interprets neurology data from sources such aspatient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay,access to care, and cost per case reports and recommends/implementschanges, as necessary.
  34. Participates in clinical trials and research studies with thePrincipal Investigator.
  35. Assists neurology Faculty, Administrators and Directors in thecollection of outcome measures.
  36. Other duties/projects as assigned.

  1. Heavy/Hard Work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting,moving, stooping, reaching, positioning of patients, standing,walking, and carrying of patients, materials and equipmentweighting 40+ pounds.
