General Description:

An Advanced Practice Provider (APP), including physician assistants (P.A.-C) and nurse practitioners (N.P.), functions as an independent healthcare provider working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive care to patients in outpatient and/or inpatient settings. Responsibilities include assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management, education, health promotion, and care coordination for patients with acute and chronic health needs. The APP collaborates with administrative, nursing, physician, and university faculty to ensure safe, effective, quality patient care and to support OU Health's educational and research missions. Care is provided within the scope of practice as defined by applicable state laws, licensing, regulations, and institutional policies.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Clinical: Conducts accurate, complete, relevant, and age-appropriate history and physical assessments. Orders and interprets diagnostic studies. Develops and adjusts care plans accordingly. Maintains accurate documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Patient Care: Provides patient- and family-centered, compassionate, and effective care promoting health, preventing illness, and treating disease across the lifespan. Ensures coordinated care and clear communication among healthcare team members. Involves patients and families in care planning, considers cost-effectiveness, and applies evidence-based practices. Develops and evaluates standards of care within their specialty.
  • Research: Engages in research activities to improve patient care and treatment.
  • Communication: Collaborates effectively with healthcare professionals and agencies. Counsels and educates patients and families. Acts as an advocate navigating the healthcare system.
  • Activities: Participates in education, organizational meetings, committees, quality initiatives, and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing (APRN) with MSN or Master's in Physician Assistant Services.
  • Experience: At least 3 years of experience as an APP in the designated specialty preferred.

Licenses/Certifications/Registrations:

  • Must obtain prescriptive authority within 6 months of hire.
  • For Nurse Practitioners: Active RN and APNP licenses in Oklahoma, Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner by ANCC or AANP.
  • For Physician Assistants: Active PA license in Oklahoma, NCCPA certification.

All applicants must obtain Oklahoma licensure within 30 days of employment and have active DEA, CPR, and relevant Advanced Life Support certifications within specified timeframes.
