General Description:

An Advanced Practice Provider (APP), including physician assistants (P.A.-C) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRN), functions as an independent healthcare provider working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive care to patients in outpatient and/or inpatient settings. Responsibilities include assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management, education, health promotion, and care coordination for patients and families with acute and chronic health needs. The APP collaborates with administrative, nursing, physician, and university faculty to ensure safe, effective, quality patient care and to support OU Health's educational and research missions. Care is provided within the scope of practice as defined by applicable laws, regulations, and institutional policies.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Clinical: Performs accurate, complete, relevant history and physical assessments, orders and interprets diagnostic studies, and develops and adjusts care plans accordingly. Maintains accurate documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Patient Care: Provides patient and family-centered care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective. Facilitates coordinated care and clear communication among healthcare team members. Incorporates patient and family in care planning and considers cost-effectiveness and risk/benefit analyses.
  • Research: Participates in research to improve patient care and treatment.
  • Communication: Collaborates effectively with healthcare professionals and agencies. Counsels and educates patients and families, advocating for their navigation through the healthcare system.
  • Activities: Participates in education, organizational meetings, committees, quality initiatives, and promotes interdisciplinary practice.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of Professional Nursing (if APRN) or MSN/Master's in Physician Assistant Services.
  • Experience: 3+ years as an APP in the designated specialty preferred.

Licensure and Certification: Must obtain prescriptive authority within 6 months of hire. For APRNs: active RN and APRN licenses in Oklahoma; some positions require Acute Care Certification. For PAs: active PA license and NCCPA certification. All must obtain Oklahoma licensure within 30 days of employment. Additionally, must have or obtain DEA license, CPR, and Advanced Life Support certifications within specified timeframes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of medical conditions' etiologies, risk factors, pathophysiology, presentation, and epidemiology.
  • High clinical expertise, procedural skills, and proficiency in medical/nursing knowledge.
  • Excellent communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, professionalism, and systems-based practice.
  • Ability to manage pharmacologic treatments, follow ethical principles, and communicate effectively with patients and families.

  • Availability for flexible work schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call duties.
