General Description:

An Advanced Practice Provider (APP), including physician assistants (P.A.-C) and nurse practitioners (N.P.), functions as an independent healthcare provider working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive care to patients in outpatient and/or inpatient settings. Responsibilities include assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management, education, health promotion, and care coordination for patients and families with acute and chronic health needs. The APP collaborates with administrative staff, nursing, physicians, and university faculty to ensure safe, effective, and quality patient care while supporting OU Health's educational and research missions. Care is provided within the scope of practice as defined by applicable state law, licensing, regulations, and institutional policies.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Clinical: Conducts accurate, complete, and relevant history and physical assessments, orders diagnostic studies, interprets results, develops and adjusts care plans, and maintains timely documentation.
  • Patient Care: Provides patient- and family-centered care that promotes health, prevents illness, and treats disease across the lifespan. Facilitates coordinated care, involves patients and families in planning, and considers cost-effectiveness and risk/benefit analyses.
  • Research: Participates in research activities to improve patient care.
  • Communication: Collaborates effectively with healthcare team members, counsels and educates patients and families, and advocates for patients navigating the healthcare system.
  • Activities: Engages in education, departmental meetings, committees, quality initiatives, and promotes interdisciplinary practice.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Graduated from an accredited school of Professional Nursing (for APRN) or holds an MSN or Master's in Physician Assistant Studies.

Experience: At least 3 years of experience as an APP in the designated specialty preferred.

Licenses/Certifications/Registrations: Must obtain prescriptive authority within 6 months of hire. For Nurse Practitioners: active RN and APNP licenses in Oklahoma, certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner by ANCC or AANP. For Physician Assistants: active PA license in Oklahoma, NCCPA certification. All applicants must obtain necessary licensure within 30 days of employment and maintain DEA, CPR, and Advanced Life Support certifications as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Deep understanding of medical conditions' etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, and epidemiology.
  • High clinical expertise in managing acute and chronic illnesses.
  • Proficiency in relevant procedural skills.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, professionalism, and systems-based practice skills.
  • Knowledge of pharmacologic agents and treatment modalities.
  • Adherence to ethical principles regarding confidentiality and informed consent.
  • Excellent communication skills and critical thinking abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and handle emotionally intense situations.
  • Proficiency with Windows applications and relevant software.
  • Reliable transportation and flexibility to work varied schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
