Advanced Practice Provider II in Emergency General Surgery (Day Shift)

Responsibilities
  1. Performs all clinical practitioner service activities in designated specialty areas, including obtaining histories, performing physical exams, making assessments, ordering tests to adequately assess, determining diagnoses, and planning care. Provides optimal medical decision-making and patient care management, consistent with the PHHS mission, to ensure good health outcomes. Uses written medical protocols and consultants appropriately.
  2. Records health history, findings, treatments, and recommendations accurately, clearly, and concisely. Manages time effectively to ensure optimal use of patient and provider resources. Consults appropriately with supervising physicians and refers patients as necessary to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  3. Engages patients and/or families in determining the plan of care when appropriate. Educates patients and families to ensure self-management, follow-up, and compliance with established treatment. Arranges appropriate follow-up appointments and develops patient education materials. May participate in community outreach activities to promote education and PHHS as a patient-centered provider.
  4. Trains, supervises, and evaluates APP students; contributes to the education of residents, interns, and other healthcare trainees. Serves as a clinical resource to other APPs and allied health professionals. Serves as a role model for junior staff and APP students.
  5. Stays abreast of developments in the practice field by attending seminars/workshops, reading journals, and participating in professional organizations. Participates in PHHS education activities, attends in-services, and shares knowledge with peers and staff to maintain a collaborative learning environment.
  6. Collaborates with PHHS staff to maintain positive working relationships. Provides patient-centered care with a focus on customer service and patient satisfaction.
  7. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines impacting APP fields. Develops internal controls to promote compliance with state/federal laws and accreditation requirements. Maintains current certifications and licensure as required.
  8. Identifies work processes and suggests changes to improve effectiveness, productivity, and efficiency. Participates in QA/QI projects and may participate in clinical research or trials.
  9. Assists in developing, implementing, and monitoring annual goals for the department; attends regular staff meetings and may serve on multi-disciplinary committees.
Qualifications

Education

- Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university and successful completion of an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant Program (or predecessors).

- Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN): Master’s degree in nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice (CCNE or ACEN accredited).

Experience

- 3+ years of clinical experience as an APP performing the same or similar duties.

- 5+ years of clinical experience as an APP in any field.

- Equivalent Education and/or Experience: Current Parkland employees hired before 3/1/2014 may have equivalent education and experience.

Certification/Registration/Licensure

Must have current BLS for Healthcare Providers from one of the following: American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or Military Training Network.

Must meet licensing and registration requirements per Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Credentialing Policies/Procedures.

- PA: Current Texas Board of Physician Assistants licensure and NCCPA certification.

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Nurse Practitioner)

- Current RN licensure from the Texas Board of Nursing or valid Compact RN license.

- Current APRN license with authority to practice as Family, Adult, Gerontology, Adult-Gerontology, Acute Care, Pediatric, or Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, as applicable.

- Active NP certification (FNP, ANP, GNP, AG-Primary Care, AG-Acute Care, ACNP, PNP-PC, PNP-AC, PMHNP, WHNP) from the listed certifying bodies (ANCC, AANPCP, AACN, PNCB, etc.).

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Certified Nurse Midwife)

- Current RN licensure in Texas and APRN authorization as a Nurse Midwife; CNM certification by AMCB or predecessor.

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Clinical Nurse Specialist)

- Current RN licensure in Texas and APRN authorization as CNS; certification as Adult CNS or Psychiatric Mental Health CNS by ANCC or AACNCC.

Skills or Special Abilities

- Provides care in accordance with Texas Nursing Practice Act or Texas Medical Board Rules, licensure, protocols, and standards.

- Demonstrates leadership, effective communication, and patient-centered behaviors; supports recruitment, retention, and change management.

- Demonstrates knowledge of Parkland policies, structure, procedures, and mission.

Must stay current with rules, regulations, policies, and guidelines affecting APP fields, participate in QA/QI, and maintain certifications and licensure as required.
