Responsibilities

  • Assist officers with temporary detention of prisoners at the Prisoner Transport Center.
  • Coordinate custody and transportation to the Metropolitan Detention Center and manage related records.
  • Maintain secure supervision of prisoners and enforce use-of-force standards as needed.
  • Administer emergency first aid and request medical support when required.
  • Maintain logs and write reports in accordance with SOPs.
  • Attend and testify in court cases as subpoenaed.

Job description

Provide temporary detainment and transportation of prisoners; prevent escapes and other criminal acts; ensure public safety while controlling the custody of prisoners; ensure the safe transportation ofprisoners in accordance with the established standards of Albuquerque Police Department and perform a variety of other duties relative to assigned areas of responsibility. This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Assist law enforcement officers; in temporary detention of prisoners at the Albuquerque Police Department's Prisoner Transport Center in accordance with the established departmental policy and procedures.
  2. Assist law enforcement officers with the custody and transportation of prisoners to the Metropolitan Detention Center; coordinate the medical screening practice, the property inventory process and the court initiation procedures of arrest documents for prisoners being booked at the Metropolitan Detention Center.
  3. Maintain the secure supervision and custody of prisoners while being detained at the Prisoner Transport Center or any mobile command center; maintain the control of disorderly prisoners by applying the use of force standards and report unusual conditions, policy violations, disturbances or indication of potential disorder to superiors.
  4. Administer emergency first aid if necessary; request emergency medical assistance through police radio communications.
  5. Maintain logs and write reports as required by supervisor.
  6. Abide by the Albuquerque Police Department Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Prisoner Transport Unit's Operations Manual.
  7. Work varied hours and days as required.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  2. Provide support to the Albuquerque Police Department in the event of a mass arrest situation or any tactical plan that requires or incurs multiple arrests.
  3. Attend and testify in Metropolitan Court, District Court and Federal Court cases as subpoenaed.
  4. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Post‑secondary education in law enforcement, criminal justice or related discipline is preferred.
  • One (1) year of corrections, law enforcement, security or military experience preferred.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must successfully pass a background investigation, and maintain appropriate fitness for duty status via annual testing.
  • Must pass the Entry‑Level Written Examination and departmental oral board examinations.
  • Must pass Albuquerque Police Department Academy Physical Fitness physical requirements: Push‑ups (15), Sit‑ups (15), 1.5 Mile Run (17 minutes), 300 Meter Sprint (76 seconds).
  • Must not have committed a misdemeanor within the last three (3) years.
  • Must not have used an illegal drug (i.e. LSD) within the last five (5) years.
  • Must not have used marijuana within the last three (3) years.
  • Must not have committed a DWI within the last three (3) years whether from an administrative sanction by a Motor Vehicle Department, a criminal conviction or a military disciplinary action.
  • Must not have committed multiple DWIs within the last ten (10) years whether from an administrative sanction by a Motor Vehicle Department, a criminal conviction or a military disciplinary action.
  • Must have no domestic violence convictions.
  • Must have no felony convictions.
  • Must have a stable credit history.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
  • Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.
  • Successfully complete and pass the Albuquerque Police Department Prisoner Transport Training Academy.
  • Maintain a firearms proficiency level of 80%.
  • Possession of a valid Firearms Certification within six (6) months from hire date.
  • Possession of a valid Taser Certification within six (6) months from hire date.
  • Possession of a valid Less‑lethal Munition/OC Certification within six (6) months from hire date.
  • Successful completion of Defensive Tactics training within six (6) months from hire date.
Environmental:

Police operations center environment; exposure to noise; potentially hostile environments; exposure to computers.

Physical:

Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate to heavy lifting; bending; stooping; kneeling; crawling; walking; standing, running and or sitting for prolonged period of time.
