Job description

Atlas Prediction Control works directly within operating plants to restore and sustain control performance, helping chemical and continuous process facilities run more safely, efficiently and reliably. We are a vendor-neutral partner, and we strengthen performance inside our clients’ existing control systems. We are a small, technical team, and we measure ourselves by results at the plant.

Role Description:

The APC Technology Development Engineer is a full-time, hybrid/remote role in the US that reports to the Founder & President. You will build the model-based control technology behind Atlas’s services: the models, simulations and software tools our engineers use at client sites. You will also own your own client relationships, run programs from scope to results, and mentor the engineers who join after you.

Build
  • Design, code and validate tools for MPC, system identification, state estimation and APC performance monitoring in Python and MATLAB.
  • Build dynamic process simulations, both first-principles and data-driven, to test control strategies before they reach a live plant.
  • Develop control approaches that use existing plant instrumentation to reduce variability and capture economic benefit.
  • Turn proven client solutions into reusable templates, libraries and playbooks.
Own
  • Own a portfolio of client accounts. Scope the work, run the programs, hold the schedule, and report results to client engineering, operations and leadership teams.
  • Serve as the senior technical expert on vendor MPC platforms (AspenTech, Honeywell, Yokogawa, Emerson and others). This includes troubleshooting, retuning, model maintenance and root-cause analysis.
Lead
  • Mentor junior engineers through specification, testing and commissioning.
  • Write the functional specifications our deployment team configures and implements.
  • Help shape Atlas’s technical standards, roadmap and hiring as we grow.
Our values
  • Ownership. You are goal-oriented, ambitious and accountable for performance from start to finish.
  • Driven. You are self-motivated, take initiative and pursue results under real operating conditions.
  • Team Player. We collaborate, help each other and lead from the front.
  • Innovative. We apply process expertise, APC and AI to real problems inside a plant’s existing systems.
Performance and growth

At Atlas, pay and promotions are based on ownership mindset, performance, growth and productivity.

Work arrangement and benefits
  • Remote within the US, with about 10% client site travel and periodic trips to our office in South Charleston, WV.
  • Base salary of $120K to $140K, plus a performance bonus.
  • Group medical, Safe Harbor 401(k) with a match of up to 6%, $50,000 term life insurance, PTO with floating holidays, tuition and training reimbursement, and a $125 per workday bonus for client trips of two weeks or longer.
Qualifications
  • MS or PhD in Chemical Engineering or a closely related field, with research in process control, MPC, optimization or process modeling.
  • 5+ years of industry experience developing, deploying or supporting model-based control in continuous process plants.
  • Strong coding skills in Python and/or MATLAB, and a habit of building your own tools.
  • Comfort with AI tools such as Claude, Cursor or Codex to speed up development and analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with system identification, MPC tuning and dynamic simulation.
  • Experience with at least one commercial MPC platform (DMC3, Profit Controller, Pavilion8 or similar), plus familiarity with DCS and historians.
  • A track record of running technical programs with minimal oversight, and experience mentoring engineers.
  • Comfort working in live plant environments with operations, maintenance and engineering teams, with a commitment to safety and quality.
  • Clear written and spoken communication, including documentation of technical work and recommendations.
  • Nice to have: Aspen Plus Dynamics, gPROMS or UniSim; soft sensor or inferential modeling; client-facing consulting; published or patented work in process control.
