Overview

The Agency of Transportation is seeking a District Technician to provide technical assistance to maintenance personnel and municipalities with regard to construction and maintenance of highways.

Overview

The Agency of Transportation is seeking a District Technician to provide technical assistance to maintenance personnel and municipalities with regard to construction and maintenance of highways.

The work includes field inspections, site visits, and use of GIS tools for inspections of roadway assets such as culverts, guardrails, and roadway surfaces. The incumbent will assist with survey and design work for developing and administrating State and Federally funded construction projects. Additionally, the District Technician will be responsible for responding to emergencies to assist maintenance personnel and/or municipalities with floods or other natural disasters, which includes assessing roadway and bridge damage for FEMA, FHWA, local officials, and State Emergency Management officials.

This is a dynamic position with a wide array of responsibilities, which also includes assisting with safety compliance and training for District maintenance staff.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in an office, laboratory, and field setting for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Class incumbents may be required to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, traverse rough, wooded, or steep terrain, travel in boats or work on structures above ground level. Duties may also require exposure to extreme weather conditions. Attendance at public meetings as an agency representative where strong adversarial opinions may be encountered. Some public speaking may be needed. Out of state travel may be required. Overtime needs are predictable.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering technology, environmental technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, construction management, or related technical field AND six (6) years of experience performing engineering support tasks involved in one or more of the following: planning, surveying, design, inspection, construction, research and statistics, testing, investigation, maintenance or construction of various types of civil engineering projects.

OR

Associate degree in civil engineering, environmental technology, engineering technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture or related field AND eight (8) years of experience as described above.

OR

High School diploma or equivalent AND ten (10) years of experience as described above.

OR

Two (2) years or more of experience as an AOT Technician V with the State of Vermont.

Special Requirements

Some positions in this job class may require possession of a valid driver's license.
