Job summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a recently graduated postgraduate intern for the AOT-IC Software team at the LANSCE facility in Los Alamos, NM. This full-time, year-round position offers mentorship, challenging projects, and opportunities to present progress to peers.

Responsibilities include updating legacy code, DevOps, network and embedded systems development, and ongoing system maintenance in a post-baccalaureate learning environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical or related field with GPA ≥ 3.0.
  • Experience coding in compiled languages (C, C++, Java) and scripting (bash, Python, Tcl, Perl).
  • Ability to document work and collaborate in a team.

What You Will Do

Come join the brightest minds at the LANSCE cutting edge Particle Accelerator Facility. The AOT-IC Software team is seeking a recent graduate looking for a challenging postgraduate internship at the post-baccalaureate level. This is a full-time, year-round position for a period of one year.


We are seeking a proactive and technically strong programmer with a focus on control system software development and maintenance. A strong emphasis will be placed on updating legacy code, DevOps, network systems, embedded systems development, and system maintenance. As a Post-Bachelor's student, we will provide you with a mentor, a challenging project, and an opportunity to present your work and progress to colleagues.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:



  • Ability to develop and maintain technical documentation.

  • Experience working as a member of a project team.

  • Ability to self-teach and work independently

  • Willingness to learn and adapt quickly in a dynamic environment

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Familiarity with the software engineering lifecycle.

  • Understanding of compiled languages such as C, C++, and/or Java.

  • Experience with scripting languages such as bash, Python, Tcl, Tk, and/or Perl.

  • Familiarity with Linux systems and tools.

  • Familiarity with software troubleshooting techniques.


Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.


Desired Qualifications


  • Experience with software debugging tools such as gdb or valgrind.

  • Experience with SQL relational database schemas, queries, and optimization thereof.

  • Skills associated with web-based applications and REST API development.

  • Understanding of instrumentation and control systems.

  • Experience developing software for embedded systems.

  • Experience with virtualization, hypervisors, and/or containerization.

  • Linux system administration and network administration experience.

  • Network management and troubleshooting experience.

  • Experience with machine learning or adaptive algorithms (AI).

  • Programming experience with VxWorks or RTEMS.

  • Programming experience with LabVIEW.

  • Experience with EPICS (the Experimental Physics Industrial Control System).

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.


Work Location

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.


New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
