CLASS TITLE: Special Education Classroom Assistant
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS: Under the general direction of the school principal, and under the immediate supervision of a Special Education teacher holding a valid teaching certificate, assists in the instruction of disabled students and performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Assists Special Education teachers in elementary and high schools to reinforce efforts with children with disabilities, including physical disabilities, visual and hearing impairments, learning disabilities, behavior disorders, emotional and mental impairments, according to each student’s IEP. Tasks include lifting and positioning non-ambulatory students, providing one-on-one tutoring and personal hygiene services, assisting with specialized equipment, instructing in daily living skills, accompanying students to activities, and maintaining records. Attends workshops and training to update skills.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS: May utilize aggressive management techniques, administer CPR as directed, operate audio-visual and photocopying equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Certification Requirements: Valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education, obtained after 60 college semester hours or successful paraprofessional exam (Work Keys or Parapro). CPR training is required or will be completed upon employment.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Knowledge of characteristics of students with disabilities, English grammar, spelling, and basic math. Ability to work with students with disabilities, follow instructions, and complete reports. Good communication skills; operation of basic equipment is desirable.
Physical Requirements: Medium work exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly. Ability to reach, handle, talk, hear, and use visual acuity.
