Zusammenfassung

Nebraska Humane Society in Omaha, NE seeks an Animal Welfare Specialist II to support the health and well-being of animals in our care. This non-exempt, full-time role runs Saturday through Tuesday, 7:00am-6:00pm, with a salary of about $19.19 per hour.

Responsibilities include humane animal handling, care, euthanasia tasks, and assisting with owner reclaims and cremation services, along with training volunteers and supporting daily operations of the Animal Welfare department.

Aufgaben

  • Provide superior care for all animals, focusing on basic needs like food, water, enrichment, and living conditions.
  • Humane and safe animal handling according to SOPs.
  • Retrieve animals for owner reclaim and cremation services.
  • Train new Welfare volunteers on daily care of animals.
  • Assist with daily dog playgroup as assigned.
  • Report behavioral or medical observations that could affect welfare.
  • Carry out shelter closing procedures before end of shift.
  • Perform humane euthanasia by injection.
  • Check and prepare paperwork for euthanasia.
  • Assist with and/or perform daily euthanasia.
  • Load deceased animals into the crematorium.
  • Clean the crematorium and cooler.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.

Animal Welfare Specialist II

This position reports to: Animal Welfare Supervisor

The schedule for this position is Saturday through Tuesday from 7:00am-6:00pm.

Purpose of Position: Support health and well-being of all animals under the care of the Nebraska Humane Society (NHS).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This position description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee occupying this position. Employees are required to follow any other job related duties assigned by their supervisor. This document does not create an employment contract implied or otherwise, other than an “at -will” relationship.

  • General cleaning including, but not limited to laundry, and dishes.
  • Provide superior care for all animals, with a focus on basic necessities such as food, water, enrichment, and living conditions.
  • Humane and safe animal handling according the Nebraska Humane Society’s Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Animal retrievals for owner reclaims and for cremation services.
  • Train new Welfare volunteers on how to assist with the daily care of animals.
  • Assist with daily dog playgroup as assigned.
  • While handling animals, must report any behavior or medical observations that could compromise the welfare of the animal.
  • Carry out proper shelter closing procedures as defined in the closing checklist sheet before the end of shift.
  • Perform humane euthanasia by injection.
  • Check and enter paperwork in preparation for euthanasia.
  • Assist with and/or perform daily euthanasia’s.
  • Loading of deceased animals into the crematorium.
  • Cleaning of the crematorium and cooler.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required
  • High school Diploma or GED.
  • Display affection and compassion for animals and concern for their welfare.
  • Must adhere to highest ethical standards: possess trustworthiness, exercise. maturity and sound judgment while maintaining a professional manner and personal appearance.

  • Must possess the ability to cope with loss of animal life from illness, injury and euthanasia.
  • Must be able to manage the emotional aspect of end of life services and humane euthanasia, and support employees in high-emotion circumstances.
  • Must exhibit the organization core values of compassion for all animals, respect and dignity for all, strive for excellence, and teamwork.

  • Previous experience in an animal welfare agency such as a vet office, animal shelter, etc.
  • Previous experience using an animal sheltering computer program such as Chameleon.
  • Associate’s degree in a Science related field.
  • Certification in euthanasia by injection.
Work Conditions:
  • Minimum 40 hours per week; will routine exceed 40 hours during a majority of the year. Rotating holiday work schedule required. Evening and weekend hours may be necessary in the event of an emergency, staffing shortages or a special event.
  • The noise level in the office environment is usually quiet, though barking or whining of animals may be escalated at certain times in certain areas of the building.
  • High exposure to animals whose reactions to the shelter environment cannot be predicted.
  • Temperatures in the shelter environment are varied, though usually moderate, and dependent on the season.
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases and hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to work around animals without severe allergic reactions.
