Job summary

Story County, IA is seeking an Animal Care Associate to provide essential care for animals in the shelter, including intake, evaluation, and administering medications.

You will feed, water, exercise, groom, and socialize animals; clean enclosures; assist with adoptions and fostering; and maintain accurate medical and intake records.

This role requires stamina to lift up to 24+ pounds, willingness to work outdoors, after-hours emergencies, and compliance with E-Verify procedures.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 1–2 years of experience in animal care or similar role preferred.
• Ability to read, write, and perform basic math.

Responsibilities

• Care for animals in shelter; feed, water, groom, exercise.
• Clean and disinfect enclosures and exam rooms.
• Assist with adoptions by providing animal history and guidance.
• Identify dangerous or injured animals and monitor post-surgery care.
• Administer medications and vaccinations as prescribed.
• Assist with humane euthanasia when needed.
• Enter data and prepare reports in shelter software.
• Maintain detailed records and logs for animals.
• Respond to emergency requests and explain policies to the public.
• Scan animals for microchips and participate in events.
• Coordinate foster care and assist in emergencies.
