Join our Animal Services Department as an Animal Shelter Attendant – Make a Difference Every Day!
Become a key part of our mission to protect and care for animals in need. As an Animal Shelter Attendant, you’ll provide daily care, enrichment, and support for shelter animals, including those requiring special attention. This role offers the unique opportunity to build meaningful connections with animals and the community, all while helping maintain a safe, clean, and compassionate environment through detailed recordkeeping and hands-on care.
Examples of Duties
- Perform daily custodial care for shelter animals, including feeding, watering, cleaning, administering medications, handling, and transporting animals to outside medical providers for care or procedures.
- Provide enrichment through exercise and socialization to promote animal well-being.
- Assist with the safe unloading, handling, and securing of animals, including those that may be injured, aggressive, or fearful.
- Conduct routine inspections of animals and enclosures to monitor health, safety, and cleanliness, promptly reporting any concerns.
- Assist in humane euthanasia procedures when necessary in accordance with shelter protocols.
- Administer vaccinations, deworming treatments, and intake procedures such as weighing, photographing, and documenting all incoming animals.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of animals during transport to and from the shelter.
- Provide exceptional customer service by responding to routine inquiries and service requests from the public in a courteous and professional manner.
- Foster a positive and cooperative work environment by maintaining open communication and collaboration with co-workers.
- Remain calm, compassionate, and professional in emotionally charged situations involving animals, the public, or sensitive circumstances.
- Accurately prepare and maintain detailed records related to animal intake, identification, health, claims, population counts, and adoptions.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED and a willingness to work with animals in shelter environment.
Manager's Preference
One (1) year experience in shelter, boarding kennel or veterinary office environment.
Professional animal handling experience in animal shelter, veterinary hospital or boarding kennel preferred
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Knowledge of State laws and local ordinances relating to rabies, animal control, and confinement of animals
- Knowledge of animal husbandry and the methods of safely handling animals
- Knowledge of breeds of animals to aid in identification of lost pets and to know temperament of various breeds
- Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public, exercising tact, courtesy and firmness when dealing with animal owners and the general public
- Ability to give effective presentations on animal care, adoption, and related topics
- Ability to maintain accurate records and reports concerning animals
- Ability to euthanize and dispose of animals
Conditions Of Employment
Employees must obtain Fear Free Shelter certification within 60 days of hire.
Employees must obtain Certified Euthanasia Technician, Rabies Vaccinator certification, and Red Cross First Aid certification for animals and humans within 6 months of hire.
Employees must complete pre-exposure rabies vaccine series after hire or show proof of prior vaccination against rabies and have an adequate titer.
Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver's license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.
Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre-employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures, prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment. Refusal to submit to testing or testing positive for prohibited substances will result in the withdrawal of the conditional employment offer.
