This position is contingent upon the contract between San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District and the Contra Costa County Animal Services Department. Should any changes occur with the terms of this contract, your employment in this role may be impacted.

Under the direct supervision of the Communications Manager the Part-Time Animal Services Dispatcher I is responsible for receiving, evaluating, and acting upon emergency and non-emergency calls regarding animal services matters; and performing related work.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Part-Time Animal Services Dispatcher I is an entry level class allocated to the Communications Center. Under general supervision, an Animal Services Dispatcher I is responsible for receiving requests for service by telephone and dispatching routine and emergency calls to Animal Services Officers in the field. These calls are regarding state and local animal cruelty and regulatory laws, in addition to other law enforcement animal services functions as well as shelter operations. The Animal Services Dispatcher I differs from the Public Safety Dispatcher in that the latter receives and acts upon emergency and routine calls in the areas of law enforcement, fire, and medical operations primarily concerning people.

The following duties are typical for this classification, incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below, to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Receives emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from the public and law enforcement agencies relating to state and local animal cruelty and regulatory laws, in addition to other animal services law enforcement matters and shelter operations.
  • Elicits information from callers, evaluates telephone calls, and decides upon or takes proper action to resolve complaints or other animal services issues.
  • Interpretsstate animal cruelty laws, local regulatory laws, animal control rules, and procedures.
  • Effectively operatesmultiple telephone lines, radio frequencies, a computer, and other applicable equipment to communicate information to Animal Services Officers in the field.
  • Tracks the location of Animal Services Officers, dispatches and assigns back-up assistance to officers, or takes other appropriate action to ensure the safety of officers.
  • Maintains records and logs.
  • Provides courteous, high-quality service to members of the public by personally responding to requests for service or making appropriate referrals.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Elicit from, and explain information effectively and accurately to a wide variety of callers including the public and law enforcement officials
  • Read, understand, and interpret ordinances, rules, regulations, and procedures
  • Effectively operate multiple telephone lines, computer terminal, two-way radio system, and other applicable equipment
  • Accurately document multiple or emergency messages under pressure
  • Maintain records and logs
  • Communicate effectively with a variety of individuals representing diverse cultures and backgrounds and function calmly in stressful situations, which require a high degree of sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy
  • Treat District employees, representatives of outside agencies and members of the public with courtesy and respect
  • Assess the customer's immediate needs and ensure the customer's receipt of needed services through personal service or making appropriate referral
  • Provide prompt, efficient and responsive service

About The District

The San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District is an independent Special District in Contra Costa County responsible for providing a high level of emergency and non-emergency services to the communities it serves. The District's service area encompasses approximately 155 square miles, serving the communities of Alamo, Blackhawk, Danville, Diablo, San Ramon, the southern boundary of Morgan Territory, and the Tassajara Valley. The communities are primarily residential, commercial, office park, and controlled manufacturing, along with wildland areas, protected by nine stations and one volunteer staffed station with 185 employees, and 56 volunteers. Financial oversight and strategic policy direction are provided by an elected 5-member Board of Directors.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION

Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or a high school proficiency certificate.

Or

At least six (6) months experience in animal services field or telephone operator/clerk responsible for receiving, evaluating, and responding to inquiries or complaints.

Education, training, and/or experience that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.
