Job summary

Maricopa County Animal Care & Control is seeking an Animal Health Technician to assist veterinarians with surgical procedures and provide preventive medical care in a busy shelter setting.

You will work on-site, support anesthetic protocols, administer treatments, and help ensure humane medical services to shelter animals while delivering compassionate client service.

Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

About the Position

We are looking for someone to join our team of dedicated technicians and help us deliver optimal and humane medical services to the animals in our care. As an Animal Health Technician, you will assist in providing appropriate medical and preventive treatments and assist our veterinarians in performing various surgical procedures. This position requires the employee to be on-site and or customer-facing for all hours worked.

We Require

• One year of experience in the care and treatment of animals at a veterinary clinic, animal hospital, or with a public or private agency
• High School Diploma or GED

Other Requirements

• Candidates must be flexible and able to work all shifts, including starting as early as 5 am and finishing as late as 7 pm, working weekends and holidays. Employees can be assigned to any shift, with any combination of days off, determined by the Department's needs

• Must be willing and able to participate on the euthanasia team as required

Job Contributions

• Participates in high-volume/high-quality surgery at MCACC by restraining animals for pre-operative exams, inducing animals, preparing animals for surgery, monitoring anesthesia, monitoring recovery, and maintaining surgical cleanliness in the surgical suite
• Provides prescribed medication and performs treatments on shelter animals
• Administers vaccinations and implants microchips into animal
• Cleans, disinfects, and maintains the clinic and job-related equipment according to established disease control protocols
• Completes data entries and maintains detailed and accurate animal health records
• Surveys the shelter population to identify animals in need of medical attention, grooming, or sterilization
• Assists staff veterinarians with various procedures, including euthanasia and emergency situations
• Educates adopters on appropriate medical care, including post-operative instructions and annual vaccinations
• Delivers quality customer service to clients, volunteers, and staff while actively promoting our mission, services, programs, and events
• Performs routine clinical laboratory tests, including fecal flotations, skin scrapes, and urine cytology
• Involved in and will perform humane euthanasia of animals when required, in accordance with departmental policies, procedures, and established protocols

Working Conditions

• Work is predominantly performed in an animal shelter with exposure to extreme and varying temperatures, dogs and cats with unknown temperaments and behaviors, excessive noise, animal waste and fluids, deceased animals, cleaning chemicals, and Zoonotic Diseases
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk on all types of surfaces, sometimes slippery, uneven, and/or rough, and to perform duties that require lifting, bending, and stooping
• May be assigned to work at other shelter locations based on operational needs. May be required to drive.
• Work involves regular participation in animal care and control activities, including the humane euthanasia of animals, handling injured, ill, or aggressive animals, interacting with members of the public, and performing time-sensitive duties under varying stressful and high-pressure conditions
• Exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly
• Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software, and Hardware: Radiology equipment, Grooming equipment, Diagnostic tools, Surgical tools, Sterilization equipment. Software: Chameleon, Outlook
• Protected Equipment Required ( PPE) is required as appropriate (e.g., in an isolation ward)
