Animal Health Inspector 1, G-14 (NY HELPS)

Position Information:

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is seeking an Animal Health Inspector 1 to work in multiple regions, including Westchester, New York, Richmond, and Bronx County. The Animal Health Inspector 1 performs various investigative and inspection activities to detect, control, and eradicate communicable diseases in animals. Responsibilities include:

  1. Inspecting and testing large domestic animals.
  2. Collecting samples for laboratory tests.
  3. Inspecting and reviewing the records of municipal animal shelters, pet dealers, breeders, and livestock markets and premises.

This position requires skilled use of veterinary medical testing devices and instruments, as well as animal restraint equipment. It can be based out of your home and requires travel within an assigned region, offering autonomy over your schedule.

The Animal Health Inspector 1 is a full-time position working 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday.

This is a PEF-represented position that offers excellent benefits, including but not limited to:

As a New York State employee, you could qualify for the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF), which forgives the remaining balance on your direct student loans after making 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full-time for the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets or another eligible employer.

The starting salary for the Animal Health Inspector 1 is $52,198/year, with potential performance advances leading to a job rate salary of $66,634/year.

Minimum Qualifications:

NY HELPS Qualifications: Current license to practice as a Veterinary Technician from the New York State Education Department and an associate degree plus 18 or more credit hours in specialized courses relating to animal health science, veterinary technology, animal husbandry, or animal science.

Travel Requirements: Appointment to certain positions requires extensive travel within a designated area. Appointees may need to operate a motor vehicle and must possess a valid New York State driver's license at the time of appointment. Field work and travel expenses are reimbursed on a fixed schedule.

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, meaning no examination is required, but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications.

Reassignment Qualifications: Current Department of Agriculture and Markets employees must have one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55 b/c service as an Animal Health Inspector 1, G-14. If you have less than one year, you must be reachable on the current eligible list for this location if one exists.

Reinstatement Under Rule 5.4: Previous permanent New York State employees who resigned may be reinstated to their former positions or to positions for which they are eligible for transfer or reassignment without further examination within one year of separation.
