Responsibilities

  • Investigates reports of violations of state laws and city ordinances including inhumane, neglectful, or cruel treatment of animals, animal bites, dangerous dog attacks, rabies exposures, nuisance animals, and livestock violations.
  • Utilizes discretion and proper judgment with authority to gain compliance through the issuance of citations and warnings.
  • Conducts field investigations into animal-related violations, collects evidence, interviews involved persons, executes search and seizure warrants, enforces court orders, prepares cases for prosecution, and testifies in court.
  • Proactively patrols the community for loose dogs, using a combination of training, experience, and critical thinking skills to capture and remove unattended or stray animals from local parks and neighborhoods.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of equipment including Animal Control vehicle, two-way radio, mobile computer terminal, body worn camera, conducted electronic weapon, catchpoles, traps, snares, nets, etc.
  • Participates in various community events and public outreach; utilizes knowledge of animals to educate the public on animal related issues including animal care, control, laws, ordinances, practices, and safe handling techniques.
  • Performs administrative tasks accurately including writing reports, collecting, and processing evidence, and maintaining records of monthly work, continuing education and trainings attended.

Under general supervision, this position promotes education and public safety by investigating and enforcing the state laws and city ordinances related to the humane care and treatment of animals. The shift for this position will be Wednesday-Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. but is subject to change based on the needs of the Unit and the City of Round Rock.

Posted pay range is the starting salary. Pay rate offered is based on experience.

Experience and Training:
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience working with animals.
Certificates and Licenses Required:
  • Current Texas Class C driver license or the ability to obtain prior to employment.
  • Must be willing to work various shifts that include evenings, weekends and holidays, and be on a rotating on-call work schedule.
  • Must obtain the following certifications within one (1) year of employment: Texas Animal Control Officer Certification
  • Texas Notary Public Certification.
  • Must obtain the Euthanasia Technician Certification within 120 days of employment to abide by Texas State Law.
