University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking a Civil Service 0678 - Animal Caretaker 1 for the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Champaign‑Urbana. The role is full‑time, Monday–Friday 9:30 a.m.–6 p.m. with rotating weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of general care and handling of companion animals (dogs, cats, birds, exotics).
• Working knowledge of infection control protocols and hospital standards.
• Ability to move larger animals such as large dogs.
• Knowledge of operating computers and hospital information systems.
• Able to adapt to new technologies, procedures, and equipment.
• Demonstrate adherence to strict protocols.
• Able to recognize abnormalities in vital signs and report to veterinary staff.
• Work in an animal hospital environment with potential exposure to diseases and biohazards.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment throughout animal care and hospital facilities.
• Clean, disinfect, and sanitize cages, kennels, stalls, rooms, and treatment areas.
• Transport animals between housing, treatment, and designated facility areas.
• Maintain inventory and assist with supplies, PPE, and cleaning materials.
• Assist with orientation and training of new employees and student workers.
