Job summary

Heartwood Haven is a nonprofit farm sanctuary in Roy, Washington, caring for approximately 100 rescued animals on a 45-acre sanctuary. The role combines daily animal care with fundraising, outreach, donations, and community programs to advance compassionate animal welfare.

The Animal Caregiver & Fundraising Coordinator focuses on hands-on animal care (3–5 hours daily) and supporting sanctuary operations, donor relations, and education initiatives. Training will be provided.

Qualifications

• Previous experience caring for animals is preferred.
• Comfortable performing hands-on animal care and learning medical treatments.
• Able to lift 50lbs regularly.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.

About Heartwood Haven

Heartwood Haven is a nonprofit farm sanctuary and animal rescue dedicated to creating a more compassionate world for animals and people. Our 45-acre sanctuary in Roy, Washington is home to approximately 100 rescued animals, including cows, pigs, emus, geese, turkeys, chickens, cats, and ducks.

Our programs include animal sanctuary, rescue and adoption, humane education, and community programs that promote compassion for animals, environmental stewardship, and a more just and caring world.

Position Summary

Heartwood Haven is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and collaborative Animal Caregiver & Fundraising Coordinator to join our team.

The primary focus of this position is the daily care and well‑being of our animal residents, with approximately 3–5 hours of hands‑on animal care each day. The remainder of the position will support fundraising, outreach, communications, adoptions, and other areas of sanctuary operations.

The non‑animal‑care responsibilities of this position will be flexible and may evolve based on the employee’s skills, interests, and the needs of Heartwood Haven. We are looking for someone who is willing to learn, takes initiative, works well independently, and wants to contribute meaningfully to a growing nonprofit.

Training will be provided.

Primary ResponsibilitiesAnimal Care & Welfare

• Provide daily care for farmed animal residents, including feeding, supplements, medications, and medical treatments.
• Perform treatments such as deworming, wound cleaning, bumblefoot wrapping, health checks, hoof trims, and medical laser therapy.
• Assist with spays, neuters, and other veterinary procedures.
• Ensure animals receive species‑appropriate nutrition, housing, and behavioral enrichment.
• Monitor residents for signs of illness, injury, or behavioral changes and communicate concerns promptly.
• Maintain accurate health, treatment, and behavior records.
• Assist with emergency response and disaster preparedness planning.
• Develop and maintain standard care processes for animals in designated areas.
• Ensure compliance with applicable animal welfare regulations and sanctuary policies.

Sanctuary Maintenance & Daily Operations

• Ensure barns, pastures, fencing, shelters, and animal spaces remain clean, safe, and well‑maintained.
• Maintain appropriate sanitation and biosecurity standards.
• Monitor feed, bedding, and other animal‑care supplies and communicate when inventory needs replenishment.
• Assist with facilities maintenance and other sanctuary needs as necessary.

Volunteer & Community Engagement

• Engage volunteers during shifts and provide regular feedback, guidance, and appreciation.
• Foster a collaborative, respectful, and mission-driven team culture.
• Serve as a knowledgeable ambassador for Heartwood Haven’s mission and programs.
• Lead educational tours and assist with donor visits, volunteer events, and community outreach when requested.
• Help educate visitors and volunteers about compassionate care and the needs of rescued farmed animals.

Fundraising, Outreach & Communications

Depending on the employee’s skills and interests, responsibilities may include:

• Assisting with fundraising campaigns, events, and donor outreach.
• Supporting donor stewardship and maintaining accurate donation records.
• Writing and contributing to the monthly newsletter.
• Taking photos and videos for social media, fundraising campaigns, donor communications, and animal updates.
• Assisting with social media and other communications.
• Supporting community outreach and fundraising projects.
• Helping with donor thank‑you communications and other development activities.
• Contributing creative ideas to help Heartwood Haven expand its fundraising and community engagement.

Rescue & Adoption

• Assist with adoption-related activities, including posting adoptable animals and helping evaluate potential homes.
• Assist with animal intake, rescue, and rehabilitation as needed.
• Support relationships with adopters, rescue partners, veterinarians, and other organizations.

Other Duties

As a small and growing nonprofit, all team members contribute where needed. Other duties may include facilities maintenance, special events, educational programs, administrative projects, or other responsibilities that support Heartwood Haven’s mission.
