We are seeking an Animal Care Technician I (99251) to provide routine husbandry services under supervision for research animal colonies. Responsibilities include cleaning cages, providing fresh food and water, sanitizing facilities, environmental monitoring, and observing animals for health issues.

Work is performed on-site in Edgewood, Maryland, 5 days a week.

The Laboratory Animal Caretaker I works with equipment such as restraint devices, autoclaves, and cage washers. Candidates should have a basic understanding of biohazards, biohazard levels 1 and 2, and safety procedures to prevent infection or exposure. Understanding the ethical considerations of animal care and familiarity with regulations are also important. Other titles include Facility Support Technician, Animal Husbandry Caretaker, and related roles.

Duties:
  1. Perform animal husbandry tasks such as cage cleaning, feeding, sanitization, environmental monitoring, and health observation with minimal supervision.
  2. Follow schedules regulated by governing bodies and SOPs.
  3. Handle animals with skill, compassion, and reliability.
  4. Maintain sanitation and cleanliness of facilities.
  5. Weekly tasks: animal census, floor scrubbing, waste management, restocking, flushing eye washes.
  6. Monthly tasks: sanitize unused rooms, check equipment, pest control, filter maintenance.
  7. Administer subcutaneous injections as directed.
  8. Perform animal euthanasia following protocols.
  9. Keep detailed records of animal care.
  10. Assist with monitoring and support techniques as needed after primary tasks.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to obtain AALAS ALAT certification within one year.
  • Reliable, skilled animal handling and care experience.
  • Excellent time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work a fixed schedule, including weekends.
  • Ability to assist with additional duties and training.
Work Environment:

Laboratory/animal containment setting with standard lab equipment and office tools.

Physical Demands:

Handling and moving animals, cleaning cages, standing, bending, exposure to allergens, lifting up to 50 lbs.

Position Details:
  • Full-time, Monday to Friday, 07:00-15:00, with evening/weekend rotations.
  • Schedule changes communicated in advance.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance; U.S. Citizenship required.
