Job summary

Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA in the San Mateo area is seeking an Animal Care Technician. The role provides humane care for all animals in our care, maintains clean and sanitary environments, and supports shelter operations with feeding, water, and supply management.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma or GED (or equivalent experience), the ability to lift up to 50 lbs, and a flexible schedule including weekends.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED, or 6 months to 1 year related experience.
  • Must lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to manage emotional aspects of end-of-life services.
  • Background check required upon hire.
  • Valid California driver's license with clean record.

Responsibilities

  • Provide humane care for all animals in the Peninsula Humane Society's care.
  • Clean and disinfect animal areas to maintain a safe environment.
  • Feed and ensure water is available at all times for all animals.
  • Unload, store and restock Animal Care Department supplies.
  • Certified in euthanasia within six months of employment in house.
  • Perform euthanasia in accordance with policies and California law as needed.
  • Perform owner present euthanasia as needed.
  • Perform decapitations on select animals per health department guidelines as needed.
  • Dispose of deceased animals properly.
  • Light maintenance and other janitorial duties.
  • Assist in training of new staff and volunteers.
  • Provide assistance to other departments as assigned.
  • Help enhance the organization’s public image behind the scenes.
  • Work to improve the quality of life for animals.

Title: Animal Care Technician
FLSA Status: Full Time, Non-Exempt; Union
Salary: $22.66 - $23.00 per hour, depending on experience

Who You Are:

A firm believer in humane care and kind treatment of animals. You have a variety of animal handling experience everywhere from cats, dogs, hamsters and more. Comfortable with labor intensive animal husbandry work and understands the process or need for humane euthanasia.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provide humane care for all animals in the Peninsula Humane Society's care

  • Perform proper disposal of deceased animals
  • Perform light maintenance and other janitorial duties
  • Assist in the training of new staff and volunteers
  • Provide assistance to other departments as assigned
  • Ensure a positive public image by enhancing the “behind the scenes” operation of the organization
  • Work to help improve the quality of life for animals
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs from ground to waist
  • Must also possess the ability to manage the emotional aspect of end-of-life services and humane euthanasia, and support staff in high-emotion circumstances
  • Upon hire, must pass a background check
  • Valid California Driver’s License with a clean record to be insured with PHS/SPCA insurance.
  • Must have a flexible schedule and the ability to work on weekends, holidays, swing shift and graveyard shift as needed
