Loudoun County's Department of Animal Services (LCAS) is seeking energetic, enthusiastic applicants to join the animal care team at the Animal Services facility in Leesburg, Virginia. We are looking for individuals who enjoy working with and caring for animals and their owners, are self-motivated, and dedicated to improving animal welfare in the shelter and community.
LCAS emphasizes creative and progressive lifesaving through pet retention, animal adoption, mental health support via kennel enrichment, foster care, and humane law enforcement. We are proud to operate the first public animal shelter in the U.S. to meet 100% of the Association of Shelter Veterinarians Animal Shelter guidelines, offering staff a unique opportunity to be part of a cutting-edge team.
As a member of the animal care team, you will meet the daily needs of all animals in our care, including cleaning cages and kennels, feeding, handling various animals such as dogs, cats, exotics, poultry, and reptiles, administering medications, and performing euthanasia when necessary. The team also provides daily enrichment to promote physical and mental health, and offers counseling to adopters to ensure the best matches. Candidates should be comfortable communicating with a diverse range of pet owners.
Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.
Requires a high school diploma or GED and at least one year of related experience. Knowledge of handling dogs, cats, and other animals is required; experience in a kennel or veterinary setting is preferred. Must be 18 or older with a valid driver's license. Bilingual Spanish is strongly preferred.
Successful candidates will undergo a criminal background check and a physical exam, including drug screening. A valid driver's license is required. Candidates must be able to control large animals over 75 pounds and lift animals up to 100 lbs. Availability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, is necessary. A rabies pre-exposure vaccination series will be initiated upon hire unless proof of prior vaccination is provided. The role involves euthanasia of animals deemed irredeemably suffering or dangerous; certification in euthanasia must be obtained within six months. Additional certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Incident Command System 100 & 200 are required, along with ongoing training. Candidates should not have allergies or fears of animals.
