Position Overview

The Operations Leader - Animal Care promotes and ensures the efficient and effective operations of the Companion Animal Department and drives the sales of aquatic pets, reptiles, birds, and small companion animals. The Operations Leader - Animal Care will coach and mentor all Pet Care Center partners in the processes to support and drive the guest experience and animal care. They are responsible for training, developing, supporting operations scheduling, and leading a high-performing team that delivers the department's sales goals, gross margin, and animal and merchandise shrink targets. They will also assist in managing all aspects of the Pet Care Center's business in accordance with Petco standards and safety procedures.

Position Responsibilities

  • Utilize business acumen to measure, analyze, and diagnose business trends and to implement business improvement plans effectively.
  • Ensure the health and well-being of live animals by providing correct care according to Petco standards, policies, and procedures, including hourly animal health checks and wellness cards.
  • Adhere to Veterinary Protocol for all sick animals.
  • Process register transactions to create a great guest experience.
  • Support guest interactions as needed, being proficient within our selling model.
  • Implement and execute Companion Animal Operations and Aquatics through training and coaching partners, including Animal Care, Aquatics, and Maintenance, Ordering, and Regulatory Compliance.
  • Order live animals efficiently to maximize sales, margin, and inventory. Analyze department data and recommend improvements.
  • Maintain operational standards in the department.
  • Ensure all animal-related maintenance tasks are completed as outlined.
  • Maintain high presentation standards in aquatics and companion animal areas.
  • Partner with Merchandising leadership to ensure proper merchandise levels and achieve goals.
  • Ensure proper handling and documentation for all adoption animals.
  • Maintain knowledge of sales and margin reports and data.
  • Lead, provide feedback, and coach all PCC partners to deliver quality service and perform tasks effectively.
  • Coordinate partner scheduling to meet in-stock and guest service goals during peak hours.
  • Apply talent management skills in recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, coaching, and succession planning.
  • Provide quick and courteous service by understanding guest needs, sharing product knowledge, and suggesting appropriate merchandise.

  • Foster a collaborative culture encouraging ideas to increase efficiency and improve guest engagement.
  • Prioritize talent development and ensure a strong talent bench with opportunities for growth.
  • Engage and be present as a representative of Petco's brand and image, leading with high standards and a positive environment.
Education and Experience
  • A high school diploma or equivalent required; some college courses preferred.
  • At least 1 year of management experience required; 2 or more preferred.
  • Must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Proficiency in communication, organizational, and computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong guest service, problem-solving, and people development skills.
Supervisory Responsibility
  • Direct supervision of Operations Specialists & Senior Aquatics Specialists.
  • Support Pet Care Center operations as a Leader on Duty, ensuring safety and proper attendance.
Work Environment

This role requires support during key hours, including weekends. Most duties are indoors, with some outdoor activities like stocking and customer carry-outs. The physical demands include bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 50 pounds), and standing for long periods. Some travel may be required.

Contacts

This position involves continuous contact with the public, other departments, distribution, and support centers, and external vendors for various operational needs.
