Job description

Essential Functions:

  • Care for, feed, and monitor animals in the shelter.
  • Report observed health or behavior issues to the department Assistant Manager/Manager.
  • Clean assigned areas daily in compliance with standard operating procedures.
  • Provide information to the public about Humane Society of North Texas programs and promote good animal care and responsible pet ownership.
  • Keep current inventory.
  • Maintain assigned equipment, supplies, and vehicles in safe condition and report any problems or needed repairs to the department Assistant Manager/Manager.
  • Represent the Humane Society of North Texas by providing excellent customer service.
  • Protect the confidential information of customers and donors.
  • Walk dogs daily in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to deal with fractious animals.
  • Work with dogs on training, such as leash training and behavioral training based on recommendations from behaviorists and trainers.
  • Perform additional tasks assigned by the department Assistant Manager/Manager.
  • Meet physical demands of the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience with animals.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information on paper and in computerized formats.
  • Ability to work under stressful circumstances.
  • Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior.
  • Self-motivated, works effectively under pressure, and can multi-task.
  • Collaborative work with all departments within the organization.
  • Ability to learn and adapt quickly to changes in programs and procedures.
  • Ability to represent the Humane Society of North Texas professionally.
  • Must be able to deal with fractious animals.
  • Will be exposed to animal odors, ammonia, diseases, contagious conditions, bites, scratches, animal waste, and moderate noise levels.
  • Must support the mission and values of HSNT.

Physical Demands:

  • Regularly use hands, fingers, handle, talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, reach, and stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds regularly, and up to 80 pounds with assistance.
  • Exposure to animal odors, airborne particles, and noise in the work environment.

Working Conditions:

  • May be required to work more than 8 hours a day or 40 hours a week.
