Job summary

Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond invites applications for an Animal Care Assistant in the Animal Care Facility under the Division of Animal Resources. The role involves cleaning animal cages, disinfecting surfaces, assembling cages, bedding and water bottles, and supporting daily operations.

You will monitor equipment, manage routine supply inventories, maintain a clean, safe work area, and assist the team as needed.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with diverse populations.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Must lift 50 lbs.
• Stand for long periods and work near animals.
• Disinfect walls, floors and cages; inspect rooms for supplies.
• Handle chemicals safely during cleaning; wear protective clothing as needed.
• Observe and respond to situations appropriately.
• Work well with others and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Clean and disinfect animal cages and racks per guidelines.
• Maintain equipment and report malfunctions.
• Assemble cages, bedding and water bottles; autoclave as needed.
• Ensure inventory of sterile cages and supplies.
• Unpack feed and bedding; store properly.
• Test eyewash functionality weekly.
• Keep area clean and organized; assist as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
