Job Description

Under direct supervision, the Animal Care Attendant maintains safe and sanitary facilities for shelter animals and the public, provides humane handling and care for shelter animals.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties:

  1. Cleans and disinfects kennels, enclosures, habitats, equipment, runs, and common areas of the facility with appropriate cleaning agents to maintain a healthy, clean, safe, and sanitary environment for animals and the public.
  2. Humanely handles, processes, and kennels all animals, wild or domestic, which may be ill, injured, quarantined, aggressive, or difficult to control.
  3. Provides food, water, and proper care for all animals; inventories food stores and restocks as needed.
  4. Under the supervision of the Veterinarian, performs regular animal health checks, administers medication, vaccinations, microchips, and provides treatment, documenting activities in medical records.
  5. Monitors animals for signs of illness or unusual behavior; reports problems to the Supervisor and/or veterinary staff.
  6. Performs euthanasia of animals, administers Schedule 2 barbiturates and narcotics, stores remains, and disposes of euthanized animals, preparing related documentation.
  7. Maintains accurate case files and records; uses a computer to input, update, and access shelter animal information.
  8. Provides information and assists the public; presents educational programs about animals’ needs, temperament, behavior, and care.
  9. Assists colleagues and volunteers with animal handling, impounding, and during special events; may assist with animal husbandry or surgical procedures as required.
  10. Coordinates and trains volunteers for animal programs.
  11. Prepares animals and supplies for transport to adoption events, veterinary clinics, laboratories, or other facilities.
  12. Participates in program development, exhibits, and special events.
  13. Identifies safety hazards to public, staff, and animals.
  14. Performs related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

  • Prolonged exposure to high noise levels and odors.
  • Work with diverse individuals, including those who may be hostile.
  • Clean animal waste and sanitize kennels/cages.
  • Fast-paced office and work environment.
  • Handling animals with unpredictable behavior.
  • Limited exposure to fumes, chemicals.
  • Lifting/moving up to 50 pounds.
  • Flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience or education in animal care:

  • Six (6) months of verifiable animal handling or volunteer work, or
  • Thirty (30) semester or forty-five (45) quarter units in animal-related coursework, or
  • One (1) year of experience in a zoo, park, museum, or university setting caring for animals.

License and Certification: Some positions may require a valid California Class C Driver's License. When assigned to Animal Care and Control, must complete euthanasia training within 12 months and maintain permit.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Customer service experience.
  • Knowledge of animal health and behavior, especially in shelter environments.
  • Organized, able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Patience and tactfulness with challenging or emotional individuals.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and shelter management software is a plus.
