Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Consult daily with anesthesiologist on case priorities and workflow.

• Place IV catheters and run in-house labs for anesthetized patients.

The Anesthesiology Technician works in close partnership with the anesthesiologist to support safe, efficient, gold-standard anesthesia throughout CARE. This is not a management position and does not have direct reports; instead, this role leads through clinical expertise, initiative, collaboration, and service to others. The role is intentionally varied, at one moment serving as the anesthetist for a critically ill or complex patient, at another preparing equipment, restocking supplies, or assisting a teammate so the next case can move forward. No task that improves patient care or helps the team function effectively is beneath this role.

Success requires someone who continuously scans the environment, anticipates what will be needed next, and acts within the anesthesiologist's priorities. Just as importantly, this person serves as an approachable and enthusiastic champion for excellent anesthesia practices, helping colleagues build knowledge, skill, confidence, and independence through modeling, encouragement, and supportive in-the-moment coaching.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Current Registered Veterinary Technician license (required)
• 2- years’ experience as clinical Veterinary Technician with demonstrated competence and confidence in anesthesia, including patient assessment, monitoring, recognition of complications and recovery (required)
• At least 1 year of experience in veterinary anesthesia or substantial anesthesia experience within a specialty, emergency, or high-acuity clinical setting.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Able to kneel, bend, reach and lift patients while assessing, positioning and/or restraining them.
• Able to safely lift 40 lbs unassisted and assist with lifting or moving objects and patients up to 100lbs.
• Able to remain active and move between clinical areas for extended periods during a shift.

Summary

SHIFT AVAILABLE:

7 AM - 5:30 PM, M- Th (eventually Tues-fri)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Consults with the anesthesiologist and veterinary teams daily on case priorities and anticipated workflow, continuously assessing needs across the hospital and proactively acting to keep cases moving safely and efficiently.
• Moves fluidly between highly skilled clinical responsibilities and routine support tasks, including preparing, cleaning, resetting, and restocking anesthesia equipment and workspaces, based on what best supports patients and the team.
• Maintains flexibility and responds calmly and constructively as schedules, patient acuity, and priorities change throughout the day.
• Performs patient assessments and pre-anesthetic vital signs, and develops and implements individualized anesthesia plans under veterinarian supervision.
• Places and maintains intravenous catheters and performs routine in-house laboratory procedures for anesthetized patients.
• Calculates and administers drug dosages accurately and complies with controlled substance policies.
• Induces, maintains, monitors, and safely recovers patients from anesthesia; recognizes and communicates complications promptly and initiates appropriate interventions under veterinarian supervision.
• Performs advanced anesthetic procedures, including epidural drug administration, arterial line placement, and central line placement, consistent with training, credentialing, and veterinarian direction.
• Positions anesthetized patients for radiographs per radiation safety standards, and safely uses, troubleshoots, cleans, and maintains anesthetic machines and monitoring equipment.
  
• Performs basic emergency care, CPR, and intensive care as needed, and maintains accurate, timely, complete anesthetic records.
• Models and reinforces gold-standard anesthesia practices, providing supportive in-the-moment coaching to technicians and assistants to help build their skill, confidence, and independence.
• Identifies opportunities to improve anesthesia workflow, safety, or consistency, and builds trust across departments by being responsive, helpful, and willing to step in wherever support is most valuable.
