Job summary

Northwell Health in Plainview, NY seeks an Anesthesia Technologist to support pre-operative and intra-operative tasks, including patient assessments, equipment setup, and invasive line procedures under anesthesia care teams.

Responsibilities include assisting anesthesia professionals, maintaining equipment, and ensuring safety protocols. 1-3 years of related experience and ACLS required; certification in anesthesia techs preferred.

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree required, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Current Anesthesia Technologist Certification, and Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Certification required, plus specialized certifications as needed.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience, required.

Responsibilities

  • Assists anesthesia professional staff as requested, as well as assists in invasive monitoring line insertion, pulmonary artery catheter insertion, central venous access, fiberoptic intubation, and/or difficult airway situations.
  • Performs invasive monitoring according to daily operating room schedule also performs preventative maintenance for all equipment according to established protocols, as well as assembles and assists with operation of specialized equipment such as humidification units, fiberoptic endoscopic equipment, and rapid infusion devices.
  • Prepares, drapes, places BP cuff, EKG leads and Pulse oximeter for patient, also prepares and assembles transducer lines and equipment necessary for arterial, central venous, and pulmonary artery pressure monitoring, as requested.
  • Sets up the operating room for cases including preparation of laryngoscope and intubation equipment, IV solution and administration sets, sets up warming devices, and assists anesthesiologist with volume infusions as directed during intra-operative volume resuscitations.
  • Responds to codes throughout the hospital, also maintains and organizes the anesthesia environment, equipment and supplies to facilitate operation of the department as well as inventories and maintains supply stock, collaborates with purchasing and acts as liaison.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions to management and arranges for loaner equipment when necessary as well as aids in capital equipment budget preparation, as well as coordinates equipment and supplies outside the operating room, troubleshoots anesthesia delivery systems, scavenging system gas analyzer, EKG, pulse oximeter, cell saver and rapid infusion devices and maintains all related records.
  • Follows protocol for all safety and infection control practices and monitors the environment and equipment to ensure cleaning standards are maintained.
  • Prepares and sets up sterile arterial line insertion and sterile introducer kits for the insertion of Swan-Ganz catheters.
  • Analyzes blood samples for blood gases, sodium/potassium, glucose and hematocrit and documents all patient tests and maintains quality control, maintenance and proficiency test results and records.
  • Participates in education of new staff members as well as ongoing educational programs for department.

Job Description

Participates as a member of the Anesthesia Care Team by performing pre-operative and intra-operative tasks for the patient having procedures requiring anesthesia. Assists licensed anesthesia care provider with patient assessments, evaluations, transport, positioning, insertion of intravenous and other invasive lines and routine difficult intubation/extubation. Responsible for maintenance and set-up of anesthesia and performs ancillary lab tests.
